The article reviews trends and perspectives for the management of social media marketing activities inhouse or by specialized agency. The positions are presented and justified that the choice of an alternative in this case has to take into account numerous factors, as well as that the trend in marketing management in the social media is that the services of digital, advertising and PR agencies in this field are more and more actively used by the companies. The results of a research, implemented in five European countries, confirm this conclusion.
