- Author(s):Nebojša Vasić

- Page Range:13-19
- No. of Pages:7
- Keywords:traditional teaching; modern teaching; principled eclecticism; holistic access; the third way
- Summary/Abstract:Principled eclecticism entails a holistic approach to teaching English which avoids pronounced contrast between traditional and modern educational paradigm. Eclecticism tends to connect seemingly antagonistic principles, methods and guidelines for the teaching of English language in order to find optimal solutions in the specific context. Traditional education is primarily focused on teachers and the process of teaching, while the modern trends are more oriented towards students and the process of learning. Principled eclecticism finds its focus in the quality teaching that is flexible and dynamic; namely traditional dichotomy is rejected as an incomplete educational concept. The meaning of the principled eclecticism is in the permeation and search for "the third way", rather than in emphasizing one or the other of opposing positions. Irreconcilable antagonism does not leave enough room for a complementary solution which is not merely mechanical addition but much more creative approach to teaching English that primarily takes into account the specific attributes of the particular context as the basis for more effective approach compared to the traditional extreme positions. Principled eclecticism requires unstoppable revisions and experimentation, and above all rejection of the dogmatic solutions that do not take into account the importance of the real context.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to explore the potential of a class blog as a space for learning and critical reflection in the context of EFL (English as a foreign language) teaching and learning. The paper points out the importance of integrating critical thinking skills into the English language teaching, which should not be focused only on language skills acquisition but also on stimulating students' independent and critical reflection. A class blog can be used as a useful medium to foster critical thinking and EFL learning by creating an online learning community which offers opportunities for reflection and facilitates autonomous and peer-to-peer learning. This paper presents a pilot study focused on 47 EFL third- and fourth-year students of the Pedagogical Faculty in Sarajevo, incorporating a class blogging component into the EFL classes. Students were asked to write their own posts and comments on the class blog during the 15-week semester, based on several topics that we had previously introduced in our in-class periods. At the end of semester, a questionnaire was given to all student participants in this projects in order to evaluate their perceptions and opinions about using a class blog as a platform for critical reflection and learning in an EFL context. The positive implications for the use of a class blog to promote critical thinking and EFL learning are discussed in this paper.

- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Education, Foreign languages learning
- Page Range:60-68
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:text analysis; critical thinking; text contents; text types; grammatical features; language forms
- Summary/Abstract:It is well known that the analysis of technical or literary text is suitable for the development of language skills but it is different from one expert to the other. The interpretation of literary texts provides possibilities for developing interest in literature, different perceptions of the world and lifestyle in general. Literary involvement, description of subjective experiences and their participation in text analysis will lead up to intellectual competencies, as crucial qualification that provides students with insights into limitations of their perspective and its reflections, while at the same time providing an opportunity for finding alternative behavior and tolerance for foreign and different. In foreign language teaching, literary or technical text analysis is significantly depreciated. It is important to stress that this analysis provides series of opportunities to gain linguistic, culturological and literary knowledge and to develop different types of competence. Analysis of literary and technical texts provides learners with the opportunity to master the language at the level above average. Besides this set goal, the development of critical thinking as an independent activity helps the development of personality as well. Furthermore, this analysis of literary and technical texts is used to explain activities related to „how the text was written and composed“. In other words, it is used to research the contents, grammatical features and language forms present in literary or technical text.

- Keywords:lowering of cultural values; interreligious and intercultural dialogue;
- Summary/Abstract:Novels written by Enes Karic “Jevrejsko groblje” (Jewish cemetery) and “Slučajno čovjek” (Accidentally human) are connected in their plots; they have a mutual hero and the central topic – the possibilities and perspectives of interreligious and intercultural dialogue. What connects them even more thoroughly is that they are novels with a thesis. Marking religions today as “museums of long gone hope” Karic doesn’t set the bar of his ecumenical expectations high. The outcome vision (thesis) of this novel writer is not to achieve some interdoctrinal consensus but to establish and maintain a dialogue as such, for which it is necessary to remove the dialogue from the religious-academic elite circles and lay it in the parterres and agoras of profane life. The author’s key operation of lowering cultural values must encompass the layman level where, as the author unequivocally suggests to us, the dialogue of religions, ideologies and cultures can only hope for effectiveness, purpose and sense. This intention created problems for the author concerning the naturalization of layman characters overburdened by the sophisticated spiritual-theological agenda and thus the surprising solutions are not always on the level which contributes to the aesthetic credibility.

It is possible to achieve this by teaching where a teacher systematically plans a range of activities which direct students to active and creative work during reading and thinking about what has been read, in accordance with their interests, needs and psycho-physical possibilities. Though a well-developed methodological approach, teachers may significantly contribute to successful text comprehension using concepts, skills and strategies of reading as an activity, which make the complex process of reading comprehension easier. Explicit teaching using strategies of reading and reading comprehension enables teachers the possibility of monitoring students' achievement in various reading phases. The paper offers an insight into the interaction of teacher-student subjects in implementing reading strategies which improve reading comprehension in primary school education and it make easier.

Despite the fact that Jews accounted only a small percentage of the population in Zenica, their contribution to economic and especially to the cultural development of the city was enormous. In a relatively short period of about 60 years, during which they have been actively involved in organizing the everyday life of the city, Jews left a strong imprint to the identity of the city. The memory of the once prominent and active community stays registered through material and non-material inheritance as a symbol of not only Jews but of the entire city of Zenica
