At the beginning of the study the author interprets the essence of literature as a communication form that creates exchange of information between people and influences the factors of communication (sender-creator, encoding, medium - book, recipient, reader - host...). While examining the concept of literature it can be conceptualized that the substantive definition of literature generally depends on the given historical and social context, and on the level of literary life and literary consciousness. Emphasis is placed on the fact that literary knowledge can be formed according to the functioning of the relationship between the author and the reader. It is precisely because hermeneutics has found (rediscovered) a unique reader in its history and updated the defining dimensions of reception aesthetics.

This paper attempts to interpret the genre of alternative history, more broadly the whole of speculative fiction, from the point of view of literary canons and contemporary postmodern literary strategies. The work discusses the transformation of the position of speculative fiction from the points of view of both English and Hungarian reception as well as it points out those parallels of world and art schools of thought which stand between the postmodern and the alternative history/speculative fiction literature. It also deals with the interdisciplinary and vitalist connections of the mentioned parallels, through which it would be reasonable to make them essential parts of present day literary education.

This study deals with the comparison of a literary and theatrical version of the fairy tale The Four Elves and the Fairy written by Ján Uličiansky. Ján Uličiansky is a contemporary Slovak author who is not only writing texts for children and youth but he is also a playwright and a radio dramaturge. The interpretation of the author’s fairy tale offers two views on the same text that has various sign forms, since the text was also adapted for theatre. Such a view on the above mentioned two forms of one text offers the reader different parallels that are elaborated on in this study.

The present paper focuses on bilingual legal dictionaries published in Romania over a period of 15 years (1999–2014). While trying to create a bilingual term base (Romanian-English) for computer assisted translation tools, we encountered different types of entries, which – in our opinion – are difficult to explain why they are included in legal dictionaries. While presenting examples belonging to various fields (e.g. biology, geography, politics, religion or economy), we will also discuss politically incorrect translations, for which there may be various explanations. As the paper stems from a larger POSDRU project, we also deal with current issues regarding the importance of published dictionaries compared to (online) term bases from various points of view, such as relevance, quality, number of entries, reliability, efficiency, or search options. We think that our results are at least surprising, as they re-shape even one of the most basic dictionary requirements, namely alphabetical order for the Romanian language when diacritical marks are involved.

This article will take a peek at whether the 3D multimodal text may serve as a personal human approach to deeper learning, while at the same time serving as a text avatar in a posthuman world. The starting point is the author’s rich experience developing multimodal texts as a tool in all levels of education, and this article is based on a case study and work with pupils in 6th, 9th, and 11th grade. The author explains the concept of the cyborgtext, and how the present concept of a multimodal text is two dimensional. The next step towards achieving deeper learning is to add a third dimension to the multimodal text, where the author has designed a wooden box for this purpose; a box which is both a mode of presentation and an integrated part of process and finished text. By facilitating a variety of learning styles, the box will be a product of the individuals’ schemata, preferences, and attitudes. The focus on tactile activities is seen as a counterbalance to an increasingly digital posthuman world.

Following in the footsteps of the research studies carried out within the fields of Corpus Linguistics, Translation Studies, and, later on Corpus-Based Translation Studies, a novel research perspective has opened the doors for what Bendazzoli et al (2018) would describe as a booming research field, i.e. Corpus-Based Interpreting Studies (CBIS). The present paper aims at framing some main theoretical and functional approaches with regard to corpus design strategies and analysis models applied to interpreting corpora. To closely investigate the analysis potential provided by interpreting corpora, we set out to design and implement a corpus-based research project, developed within MAXQDA, a virtual environment.

The present work aims to analyze, from a historical perspective, the more than popular story of Sindbad the Sailor, located in the narrative piece, The One Thousand and One Nights. The axes of the analysis will be divided into three theoretical categories: identity/otherness, time, and space. With this kind of magnifying glass, we will try to understand not only the historical background of the work itself but also, the society in which it was created and shaped it.

This article attempts to cover a small, but significant part of the cultural history of bread, which focuses on the representation of bread and its so-called cultural partners in English literature: leavened bread and wine, bread and beer, bread and water, bread and salt, bread and milk, bread and butter. The history of bread is closely interconnected with cultural identity and over the years, not only the production of bread has changed, but bread itself has changed. This change has been captured in literary texts which illustrate how particular contexts and norms have determined the making of modern bread. The article explores how the literary works included here reflect cultural norms, practices and values that are associated with bread production and consumption at a certain historical time and in a specific social geography in order to determine how they have shaped the perception and behaviour of particular social groups.

Dylan Thomas’s poetry has often been categorized as being excessively occult and complex. The present paper will attempt to particularly identify the elements that create the mythology of death, trying to emphasize that the spiritual presence that lurks in the poems is deeply connected to his idea of primordial origin and that, in his conception, life and death develop a unique common path – just like time becomes the agent of fiction, memory can become the agent of death.

Our essay identifies the autobiographical elements within Dickens’s novel Little Dorrit, seen as the writer’s response to his age marked by the Industrial Revolution, the process of urbanization, and the technological development, and as one example of his concern with social issues such as poverty and marginality. A closer reading of Little Dorrit reveals a wealth of personal details, giving the novel a pronounced dimension of confessionalism: his early childhood and the first encounters with the labyrinth of Victorian society, the first-hand reports from the debtors’ prison, or the institution of the Circumlocution Office.

Toni Morrison’s Beloved, although based on a terrible antebellum episode that shook America, is not a historical novel, despite some notable claims to that effect. To come up with a gripping narrative of imaginative engagement with the past, an author like Morrison has to leave out most of the apparently objective facts of history. These facts, far from removing the vividness and pathos of Beloved, provide a framework and a substance in contrast to which a work of fiction is more likely to be appreciated in its ‘biased’ approach to human experience. What follows focuses on the significance of the Railroad Underground in the shaping of the abolitionist ethos in antebellum America, at the time of Margaret Garner’s trial.

The present article looks into the way in which former US President Barack Obama capitalizes on the emotional resources of the rhetoric of hope, making use of promises in the State of the Union Addresses in order to win over the audience or, as the case may be, to reinforce his legitimacy and enhance the credibility of his political persona. The research sheds light on the role promises play in political communication, on the way in which they have become an inherent part of a politician’s permanent campaigning, that is, campaigning that goes beyond electoral purposes and aims to put forward and consolidate a specific, long-lasting public image. The corpus consists of the State of the Union Addresses Obama delivered throughout his two terms of office, and our main goal is to identify how the speaker resorts to making promises both for electoral purposes, and to adequately respond to the public’s expectations. Thus, promises not only help lay out the prospect of a brighter future, they also contribute to shaping a political agenda in line with the requirements of the audience.

The study investigates whether the Linguistic Landscape (LL) in the main street of Ramallah, Palestine should be considered a situational variable of the English language in the country or a treat-like variable and exclusive to this city. The analysed data include over 519 pictures of signage so as to determine the number of languages used on the signs, the signs genre, their taxonomies, and the number of languages. Findings evince that there are significant differences between language policies and the street reality. The linguistic landscape in the street is not abided by the official language policy regarding the state language (Arabic) nor does it employ any minority language. The results of the study may contribute to ameliorating the situation through the policymakers to rectify the state language status. Further studies are expected to arrive upon other factors that influenced the status quo.

Whether we think of advertising and the company communication policy as of a so-called “birds’ courtship dance” or a “wonder-box” of the market economy, advertising is a serious multimedia challenge. Since advertising spares nobody and nothing, one can ask oneself: not why, but how advertisers manage to disregard/trespass social (ethical) norms? Especially how de-tabooization and stereotyping (here in the broader context of gender identity) are employed in the “communication” of low-involvement products. Starting from a controversial on hygiene product in Germany, the paper discusses the way advertisers handle words and images, social relevant attitudes and values, and create messages which can reshape thinking and behaviour, thus endorsing possible misrepresentations.

Upon first thought, the idea of disease, of pestilence, of plague, of exposed contaminated flesh or tissue, may provoke repulsion and ontological fear, or trigger questioning the author’s reasons for tackling such a topic. However, upon closer look and reading of the first pages in Florian Andrei Vlad’s book, one quickly understands and becomes an adept of the author’s endeavor.

Hrvatsko kršćansko nazivlje prožimaju tri bitna jezična elementa (grčki, latinski i slavenski) u višestoljetnoj tradiciji njegova stvaranja.
