The publications of Petko Slaveykovwhich are analyzed here and which comment on the personal behaviour and journalist activities of Marko Balabanov reveal a range of deeper clashes between the two notable figures of the period. The public milieu of the Revival press gives grounds for considering the methodology and structure of the political through the stereotype, preconditioned by consciousness, languages, educational background and mentality.

The text shall try to present a possible literary-historical reconstruction of the histories of Bulgarian literature published in the 20th century. It will trace how literary history was read and conceptualized through them in different sociocultural contexts. It will mark the mechanisms through which literary history build the canon of Bulgarian literature, insisting on its unique and unchangeable value. It will outline how differently authors in different periods sort and rearrange the authors and the works chronologically or hierarchically in a complex historical megatext. And how in different authors the megatext reveals – forgets; praises – denies some basic art and aesthetics signs and how they, through their dialogue and polemics, construct different models of national spiritual plot. That presupposes literary history as memory of the past as well as respecting knowledge, stored in documentary evidence and archive documents, but also as subjective author’s conceptions.In this sense, in the creation of the literary-historical narrative is important not only the aesthetical and sociopolitical context, but also the figure of the author who creates both literature and history. Literary histories as an author’s project or as collective academic experience, as a pretense for a fundamental conceptualization of processes in art or as fragmentary plots can be reminded and read as objective or manipulated narratives about a national literature. They can be interpreted in a unique cultural context where multiple creative and existential plots that meet, intersect, discuss and complement.

On the focus are the unwritten Aleko Konstantinov’s travelogue about World Exposition in 1889 and Eiffel tower, Konstantin Konstantinov remarks on Paris before WW1 and after, in 1931, when Colonial Exposition came through and Petar Dinekov new published diary about Paris in 60s of XX century. The final part considers the participation of d-r Stefan Watew in World Exposition in 1900, dreaming by Aleko and unrealized because of his brutal murder in 1897.

The paper follows a literary scandal kindled by the publication of the first volume of Michail Kremen’s “The Novel of Yavorov” in 1959. After considering the idiosyncrasy of the genre it goes on to differentiate five separate “novels” (five plot lines) inside it. The first one is “the novel of Kremen”, a kind of a bildungs narrative; the second portrays the ambivalent and dramatic presence of Peyo Yavorov; the third focuses on his tragic wife Lora Karavelova-Yavorova; the fourth highlights the never seen so far psychological drama of Totka (Dora) Konova-Grozeva; the fifth follows the reception of the book immediately after it was published. The paper is based on prolific research of archive documents and periodicals published in Bulgaria at the end of the 50’s and the beginning of the 60’s of XXth century.

The essay traces the changes that have occurred in the communicative attitudes of the magazine in the course of a decade. The reorientation of reading from the dominant genre of documentary reportage to the dominant expression entailed in the essay, as a form, is deeply connected with the transformation of the envisaged modelling of the exemplary “socialist woman“. The text outlines the symbolic potential with which the narrative models of the reportage woman and the essay woman are vested and seeks to elucidate the grounds for their delineation and difference. At the beginning of the period the reportage woman is the pre-announced, fully-realized (but future-oriented) presence, which recruits “facticity“ and “reality“ (the genre characteristics of the documentary reportage) from the database of the repertoire of ideological references. At the end of the period, the essay woman can rely solely on the genre fields of morality fable and caricature and even heroic chronicles prefer to recognize the “facts“ of the past and convey them to the readers through the figure of the essay woman.

Обединена Европа - "откритие" на Петко Славейков?

The study focuses on a string of publications in the newspaper “Macedonia” between 1867 and 1869. In the traced overall evaluation of past political events one can detect ideas that Petko Slaveikov had been preoccupied with for a long time and to which he had dedicated numerous journalist pieces. Here I dwell in detail on some essen tial characteristics of the political thinking of the Revival period intellectual, especially with regard to the issues concerning his take on the image of united Europe that touches upon his vision of the fate of European peoples and their short or long term future.

Критика потчињавања и породичног насиља у приповијетки "Наказао је бог" Љубена Каравелова

This paper analyzes the socio-critical aspects of the short story “Nakazao je Bog” by the Bulgarian writer Lyuben Karavelov (1834–1879), published in Serbian in 1870. The fact that this short story features strong criticism of subjection and domestic violence, which, so far, has not been discussed in theoretical terms, represents the basic hypothesis of the paper. The authors rely on the feminist approach as the point of departure with regard to the theory and methodology applied, that is, for the theoretical, terminological, and critical framework as laid out by feminism concerning the literary issue in question. Thus, the paper points to the role Lyuben Karavelov played in Serbian social circles of the second half of the 19th century, to his activism in the “United Serbian Youth” organisation, as well as to his significance within the context of the emergence of the women’s suffrage movement in Serbia.

The following paper focuses on the origins and development of samizdat literature in the city of Plovdiv in the 1980s. First of all it draws attention to two books of verse: Vasil Urumov’s Poetry (Poeziya) and Krasimira Aleksieva’s Against the Wall (Do Stenata). Besides outlining the genesis of samizdat and its role as an unofficial literary channel, this paper focuses on a specific anti-totalitarian poetics of both authors and their role in the general context of the Bulgarian literary samizdat.

Česká přebásnění Botevovy balady-rapsodie o nesmrtelnosti Хаджи Димитър

The essay deals with the issue of the Czech translations of Botev’s balladic poem Hadzhi Dimitar on the occasion of its new translation by Ludmila Kroužilová, which hasn’t been published yet. Eight translations are being analyzed in their chronological order of appearance. From the oldest one by V. Rabský (pseudonym, perhaps of J. Wagner, 1881), followed by the translations by V. Šak (1909), Z. Broman (= F. Tichý, 1913), F. Kožík and A. Leštov (1930), J. Pilař and Z. Hanzová (1950), J. Pilař and D. Hronková (1974) and I. Dorovský (2010) to the aforementioned translation by L. Kroužilová (2018). The full text of the most recent translation is available at the end of this paper. Praised are its poetical impressiveness, modern diction and formal and contextual closeness to the original text.

České a bulharské hudební pohádky

This paper compares a musical Bulgarian fairy tale Prikazka za La Minor (2013, 2014) by A. R. Wagenstein and four Czech fairy tales: Strado & Varius aneb setkání s Mozartem (2002), Strado & Varius (2003), Strado & Varius ve škole Johanna Sebastiana Bacha (2004) and Strado & Varius a léčka Rudého abbé (2005) by M. Skala. Books are classified according to the narrative and the age of readers. They are analysed on several levels. The paper focuses on similarities and differences between the main and supporting characters. It also reflects on the comparison of the time and the space of literary works and motifs from musical history. The paper further consider the theory and didactic function aimed at the small recipient.

The aim of this paper is to confront and stratify compositional scheme with а specific motif of clash between relatives due to unrecognition. Equally present in Vuk Karadzic’s, Sima Milutinovic’s, and some Bulgarian variants, same as in the Persian canto Shahnama, this motif reveals it’s complexity based on readers perspective, when the most significant analogies and differences appear in the named scheme: from genre dualism (ballad or epic), to the problem of mythical or naturalistic (historical) space or idea and Maximilian Braun’s typology of heroes.

Одеският литературен кръг от 40-те години на ХІХ век и след това (Д. Чинтулов, В. Друмев, Св. Миларов)

A group of Bulgarian high-school students in Odessa (Nayden Gerov, Dobri Chintulov, et al.) made their first steps in literature and thus initiated the new Bulgarian poetry in the 1840s. Other men of letter studied here in the following decades; this town had a specific presence in Vasil Drumev’s novel Student and Benefactors; from here Svetoslav Milarov send long articles to the newspaper Pravo (Law) in Istanbul. Later, during the government of Stefan Stambolov, a new emigrant group was formed for a short period in this town on the shore of the Black Sea; Ivan Vazov participated in it, and here he started writing his famous novel Under the Yoke. This paper draws attention to the way how Bulgarians in Odesa saw this town, to what extent they were interested in Ukrainian culture, and how this interest developed over time.

Преходът в съвременния български роман – жанрови вариации и семантични контексти

The article examines the images of the post-1989 Transition, as they have been constructed in the contemporary Bulgarian novel. The novel genre has traditionally been associated with making sense of historical and social turning points. However, in the period since 1989, it has itself been subjected to much experimentation and exploration, which has also affected the way in which it portrays the recent past and the present. The focus of the present article is precisely on the intersection between the processes at work within the genre of the novel and the types of interpretations of the theme of the society of the Transition. The issues are discussed chronologically, beginning with a commentary on the images of the Transition in the novels of the 1990s and continuing with those of the early twenty-first century. It is noted that the novel’s interest in the theme of the Transition has been growing with the advance of the present century. The main conclusion is that the contemporary novel seeks new opportunities to interpret social and historical issues. Different genre and narrative models characteristic of the theme of the Transition in the Bulgarian novel since the 1990s are outlined.

Българският роман през първото десетилетие на XXI век: какво се случва с нашия „критически реализъм“?

This paper follows the transformations of the so-called “critical realism” in the development of Bulgarian fiction during the first decade of the 21st century. Debating the popular critical opinion that social topics are rarely met and feebly presented in modern Bulgarian literature, the paper articulates a thesis of its own; the idea stands based on the example of many novels written during the first decade of the new century. Any search for traditional ways of social representation nowadays is pointless. The paper highlights how different types of novels (urban prose, “women’s writing”, satirical novel, etc.) assimilate social themes within the framework of their genre specifics. The article ends with a summary of the observations made and the conclusions reached.

Трилогията на Виктор Пасков („Балада за Георг Хених“, „Германия, мръсна приказка“, „Аутопсия на една любов“) и преходът

The topic, as well as the aim of the project to examine the interconnections between the Transition and literary models, presupposes two different kinds of relations: firstly, the presence or the marked absence of the concept of the Transition in Paskov’s novels and their narrative perspectives, and secondly, the publication and the reception of these works in the social environment of a transition (1987–1992–2005). The purpose of the paper is to rethink the mutual historical positioning of the three novels and to sketch out a possible common direction of their interaction. A key to such an interaction can be found in the individual’s indelible bodily co-presence in the ghetto represented though its forms of mimicry in the communal life in the neighbourhood (A Ballad for Georg Henig), the artistic gastarbeiter dormitory (Germany – A Dirty Tale) and the “global henhouse” of the ultramodern world (Postmortem of a Love). Always and everywhere, the ghetto entices the artist in its desire to ensnare, entrap and ultimately destroy him.

Невидимото в литературата на прехода

Invisibility is a theme frequently exploited in imaginative literature. However, during the Transition writers began using it even more often. In a number of works, the attribute “invisible” is part of their very titles. Such are, for example, Georgi Gospodinov’s collection of essays The Invisible Crises (2013), Ventzeslav Konstantinov’s book of poems The Invisible Unavoidable Things (2013), the collection of very short stories by Mira Dushkova Invisible Things (2014), Natalia Deleva’s novel The Invisible Ones (2017), Mehmed Atipov’s collection of short stories Invisible Life (2018). The literature of the Transition not only actualizes but manifests with added emphasis its interest for the metaphysical topics in art. This is not only a reflex born out of the rejection or neglect they suffered in the years of state atheism but also an expression of the renewed interest in them in crisis situations.
