Mercy is an element of common human experience, on which we count, which we express and receive throughout all our life. Apart from its philosophical and theological dimension, mercy has also an educational quality. The article explains the common understanding of the concept of ‘mercy’ and focuses on its perception from the Christian perspective and its manifestations in everyday life. A merciful person’s lifestyle is described in regard to the quotes from the Bible and the teaching of popes, i.e. John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis. The following parts of the paper investigate the issue of mercy education in family, school and youth organizations. The final part of the article discusses the value of mercy in the life of adults and elderly persons.

The presence of the child in the family is closely related to acting of spouses - parents who give and receive themselves to each other. The child has the right to live among people who accept him/her absolutely, regardless his/her health characteristics or the time when s/he appears to the world. Therefore, from the moment of conception the child should be included in the family by the nearests. At no stage of his/her life does the child belong to anyone - no one has the right to decide about his/her life. The people bearing most of the responsibility for the child’s life and development are the parents, whose duty it is to create a safe family atmosphere, enhancing the development of all members of the community. In John Paul II’s teaching, there is a belief in decisive significance of the bonds between spouses - parents for raising a child. Raising a child in the family takes place mainly through daily building of the community based on mutual service.

The family is the first and the most important community in which the development of human’s personalities is making. The essential role in the building of the family as a marriage community ecompasses appropiately understood personal dialogue between its members realised in freedom and responsability which in a consequence leads to the engagement in the process of upbringing. The pedagogic concept of one of the representatives of pedagogic idea, the author of the concept of personal-existential pedagogy known as pedagogy of dialogue-father Janusz Tarnowski, forms part of the mainstream of the Christian human’s vision and integral humanism. The upbringing in the teaching of John Paul II thought as <the Pope of the dialogue> is strongly set in the space of universal values of truth, good and beauty to form the pupil’s humanity of which the author of the concept of pedagogy of dialogue writes.

The inspiration to write this article became the words of John Paul II cited as a motto, pointing to the value of human and Christian solidarity implantation of a disabled child in the family. The article is an attempt to interpret this thesis. For the purposes of the author to develop solidarity be multifaceted to be seen. It is the cooperation of both parents of a disabled child of God, experienced in religious experiences. And the need to support theological ofiarowywanego them by the pastors. Both its forms contribute to a change of optics parents looking for their child’s disability. Being helpful in overcoming crises, in przepracowywaniu disordered poczuciami hurt, grief, despair, suffering, and other negative emotions experienced. Above this value the human and Christian solidarity is also the same attitude. Understood as solidarity assistance provided for their disabled child, manifesting itself in giving him special care.

Performing work is connected with development of knowledge and skills, social and personal competences and forming character, which leads to self-education of the person performing it. The target of this study is showing educational dimension of work based on encyclical Laborem Exercens by John Paul II as well as drawing attention to the work-related values, connected with work as development area of a person and their humanity. Therefore education and self-education-related issues will be presented in this study, concerning preparation for work, values associated with it and insights into work-related sources of forming a person’s subjectivity. The study is of theoretical character and presents deliberations based on the pope’s encyclical and literature on education, values, forming subjectivity and work pedagogy.

Wybrane poglądy Jana Pawła II o seniorach

The aim of the article is to consider John Paul II’s teachings on the old age in the light of current trends in the domain of social gerontology. John Paul II’s struggle with his own illness, pain and old age made him the symbol of all the frail, the old and the poor suffering physical pain and every day anxiety. This way, he addresses doctors, politicians, clergymen, and the faithful themselves to take care that senior citizens live their lives in dignity, to alleviate their pain and to support them in their trials and suffering. The Pope considers problems of elderly people individually and in the global perspective which, on the one hand, encourages undertakings aimed at helping the old, on the other, promotes efforts to identify and determine problems following from the fact of the growing number of old people within the society. The teachings of Pope John Paul II include both kinds of the mentioned issues concerning the ageing society of the world.

Starość jako zadanie dla człowieka - inspiracje w nauczaniu Jana Pawła II

The principle of this paper is that a human being is not merely a body, but the spirit connected with the body. Thus when the body goes weak, and human power diminishes, an individual, as a combination of matter and spirit, may still be active, useful for the family, the loved ones, and for the society. The article “Old age as a man’s task – inspirations of John Paul II’s Teachings” has been divided into five stages. In the first part we conduct anthropological views of John Paul II. In the second we present a social diagnosis of the elderly. In the third we approach what the Church is doing for the people of the third age. In the fourth we discuss the tasks of children and grandchildren; and in the fifth we focus on the duties of the elderly. Our reflections end with John Paul II’s words of comfort addressed to the elderly during a meeting in Munich.

Early and middle childhood is the best time for shaping religiosity of a child because religious structures of holistic character. Childhood is characterised by significant openness and religious readiness. Sensitivity to religion is much stronger in case of children than in case of adults, because this experience is purely intuitive, and it is not contaminated with reasonable intellectualism. The relation with God goes beyond an intellectual ground and it takes place deep inside at the existential level, therefore children, because of their special qualities, have exceptional abilities of experiencing this relation in an intuitive way.The following treatise is to characterise the special character of a child’ religiosity in the context of their natural qualities of development and to determine the aspects which make the direct contact with God so “unique and inimitable” in case of children.

Cyberprzestrzeń jako "forum" oddziałujące na młode pokolenia w refleksji Jana Pawła II

Internet as a contemporary and universal medium plays the role of crowded and full of life space, tempting by its mystery. This place compared by John Paul II to a ‘roman forum’ shows both the best and the worst features of human nature. As the Pope highlighted it hides in itself not only the promise of adventure but also dangers. The aim of the paper is to show how influence of the Internet on young people who were growing up in the times when the technology was developing. Cyberspace is for them an open window to the world, gives possibilities of discovering, getting to know, taking part in and experiencing in the sphere of interpersonal relationships, world views and the sphere of values. Unfortunately being in the cyberspace by young people from all over the world is still a privilege not a right. There is a real threat that the existing inequalities of poor countries and the gap in the sphere of communication and information will be getting deeper.

The article describes men, their hierarchy of values and highlights the individuality of human nature. Any human being aware of the hierarchy of values knows where they are heading in their lives. Without clearly stated goals people become in luenced by what is surrounding them, whereas when they know the direction they heading towards, they have no doubt of what they are doing. The things that we value the most are the things that create the image of us. Therefore, becoming familiar with oneself is at the same time one of the most important and dif icult tasks that a person encounters. A human being is a rid-dle for himself. The more information he gathers, the less he knows. If a human knew everything, he would be God, but if he knew nothing, he would be an animal. The human lack of knowledge about himself, as well as any lack of knowledge does not mean there is no such thing as the human nature but on the contrary-it is a part of that nature.

The theme of holiness has been present in the teaching of the Church from the very beginning of her existence. A number of cultural, civilization or technological changes result in the formation of new guidelines for sanctity. The following analysis is an attempt to formulate some of them which concern technological development. The main purpose of this article is to find an answer to the question: How to manifest holiness in social media? The main message is based on the Church teaching on holiness, especially on Gaudete et exsultate, the latest papal document presenting this issue. Subject analysis of the materials (the Church teaching) has allowed the authors to suggest specific guidelines regarding holiness in social media.

The Church - responsibilities and models of service

The Church was founded by God, constitutes the assembly of believers who assume an identity defined by Jesus built on the sacrifice of the Son of God and is mandated to glorify God and lead people to salvation. With divine origin and universal character, the Church is also vested with the authority to fulfill the original plan of God, which has been formulated in other terms - “make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19). The nature of the Church is highlighted by the metaphorical images used in the New Testament: the Body of Christ, the People of God and the Temple of the Holy Spirit. The major responsibilities of the Church are the permanent disposition to serve and the ability to adapt both their expression and the way they relate to the constant changes. The patterns that the Church should use in ministry are those of the herald, who proclaims as message and servant, who transforms churches into an expression of deaconry. These issues are the central point of any discussion about the church since it sets the definitions and duties of the church alongside the social and religious postmodernist context to which the church must not only cope with it but must also improve it. Basically, the significant definitions, functions, models, and responsibilities of the Church must personalize the Church’s offer in such a way as to make it attractive for these times.

The sacred in Cuba, Haiti, Brazil and Benin Republic: aspects of a linguistic and cultural dialogue

The so-called Transatlantic Traffic imposed new linguistical and cultural configurations on the three continents involved in this tragedy: Africa, America and Europe. Such configurations acquire a complex of dynamics that, nowadays, we speak of flux and reflux of traffic, because of the intense and broad cultural and social exchange between these continents. Religion is one of the main or fundamental elements that is diluted in the cultural exchanges between Africa and America, especially those of the so called Sudanese nations, which receive various denominations: santeria, vodun, and Candomblé, among others. I will deal with the presentation of the Jeje nagô pattern in order to promote a dialogue, taking in account manifestation in Cuba, Haiti, Brazil and Benin. I will choose, describe and analyse from a comparative perspective a sample of songs and ritual lexicon (including terms of kinship) of Dahomean and Ewé-Fon origin in arará santeria, vodun in Haiti, and Mina-jeje candomblé in Brazil in one part of the study, and in the other part, with the vodun of Benin. This experience will undoubtedly shed light on the diversity and richness of meanings attributed from cultural and social relations in religious spaces and in society as a whole.

Imaginary and Pretos Velhos - adaptation of a Brazilian symbol in European contexts

This article seeks to show, through an examination of music and Pretos Velhos entities, the transnationalisation and the adaptation of an Afro-Brazilian cult of possession (Umbanda) in a French, Belgian and Swiss contexts. By analysing songs, dances and rhythms, I focus on the diacritical characteristics from Pretos Velhos entities in Umbanda and on the discourses of mediums (during and after possession), to emphasize the representation of these entities in their adaptation society. The purpose of this article is to show howthe Pretos Velhos, and also music (rhythms and dances), are one strategic point of adaptation of Afro-Brazilian cults. The work of imagination (here conveyed by music), shows the transcendence of a historical symbol by a European romantic symbol (the storyteller) that will create this new area where the Umbanda can adapt to the European contexts.

Àwọn `Ọnà Mímọ́: Axé women in New York city and their sacred paths

This article is an ethnography of Candomblétransnationalization to the city of New York. I describe the journeys of three Brazilian mães-de-santo (mothers-of-saints), who have carried their practices and knowledge with them from Brazil. I report how they settled in the city, the dialog with urban space in a megalopolis, the changes that have occurred in the rituals, and the potential transpositions to this new space, their clientele and motivations. It aims to comprehend the importance of the Candomblé itinerary as one of the main components responsible for its maintenance, establishment and expansion in Brazil and in other parts of the world. The connecting points of this article were the stories of three Brazilian mothers-of-saints who moved to New York City, carrying with them Candomblé rituals practiced in Brazil, transposing them to this new place, having to discuss and rethink their practices in the North American context, reinventing traditional religious settings or, rather, inventing traditions, and dialoging with the concept of reinvention of tradition, as proposed by Roy Wagner (1975). An important topic found in this reinvention process is a change of hierarchy, as a more horizontal interaction system is adopted by the mothers-of-saints with their devotees and clients, as opposed to the more vertical model which prevails in the Brazilian terreiros (places of worship). Following the work of the three mothers-of-saints, aiming to transpose religion to a new context, I describe their encounters with their devotees, who seek health care and well-being through the use of plants and prayers during rituals and religious ceremonies.
