The aim of this article is to develop a hybrid CART-logit model that combines decision trees (CART algorithm) with binomial logit model. The dependent variable refers to the decision-making process in Polish households in the area of durable goods. The results have shown that hybridization of these two analytical tools can improve the accuracy of prediction and enrich the interpretation of relationships among variables.

Segmentacja łańcuchów środków-celów: miary podobieństwa sekwencji i ilościowe wskaźniki jakości grupowania a wyniki grupowania

The Means-End Chains are built with qualitative and sequential data describing the cognitive-motivational structures of consumers, which can be used for market segmentation. The objective of the study is to analyse whether and how sequence dissimilarities measurement affects the properties of the selected quantitative cluster validity indexes and the final results of exploratory cluster analysis. The following measures of sequence dissimilarity were used in the grouping of 482 ladders: Hamming, the longest common subsequence, the longest common suffix and optimum matching. S cluster validity indexes were used to measure clustering goodness: silhouette, index of Baker and Hubert and index of Hubert and Levin. Based on the cluster validity indexes the model with 8 groups was selected as the best irrespective of the sequence dissimilarity measure used in the analysis.

Kompetencje konsumentów w świetle badań ilościowych

Marketing research allows exploring knowledge on contemporary consumers. Particularly the simultaneous use of quantitative and qualitative research provides an opportunity to obtain a fuller picture of consumers, their behaviour, attitudes, to fuller assess the level of their knowledge, also in the context of sustainable consumption. In the article, there are presented some findings of the quantitative research carried out in the period from June to August 2013 which allowed creating a profile of the competent consumer. The omnibus survey was carried out on the nation-wide representative sample of 1000 adult Poles (aged 15-74) by the face-to-face method and the PAPI (Paper and Pencil Interview) technique. The main research was carried out on the national sample of 1000 adult Poles (aged 18-74) who have at least the minimal consumer competences (determined by the team implementing the research project), with the use of questionnaire-based survey by the CATI (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interview) technique.

In the recent years, the matters connected with the measure of image have become important in the field of territorial marketing. At the same time the analysis of the structures of perception is one of dominating areas of research on the image of territorial units. An important problem is the issue related to the nature of entry data (if they are symmetrical or asymmetrical). The article is devoted to the possibilities of asymmetrical data analysis in the image research of territorial units. For this purpose, basic definitions and categories have been presented connected with the image and its measurement, and the possibility of asymmetric data modeling. Particular attention was devoted to the possibilities of using asymmetric multidimensional scaling.

The aim of the article is to analyze the trends of changes on the Polish market of marketing research in the area of research methods against the background of the evolution of the characteristics and behavior of the “new consumer” who is becoming more and more demanding and a “difficult” subject of research. Particular attention was paid to the methods of the Internet research and neuromarketing, focusing on the process and tools of eyetracking. In the article there were used Polish and foreign secondary sources including annual results of the marketing research in Poland, carried out and published by PTBRiO (The Polish Society of Market and Opinion Researchers) as a base for making comparisons and identification of the title changes.

Wpływ muzyki tła na reakcje konsumentów w miejscu sprzedaży – problematyka interdyscyplinarności badań

The research problem of an impact of background music on consumers response in the points of sale has gradually been incorporated into the stream of interdisciplinary research mainly combining knowledge of psychology and marketing. The basic objective of the paper will be an attempt to include the musicology and psychology of music perspectives by the presentation of selected methods that were created in the field of musicology (i.a. theory of emotional response based on musical structure perception [Meyer 1956]) and experimental aesthetics (i.a. the theory of musical preference [Berylyne 1971]). The starting point will be the analysis of the model of musical response formulated on the ground of social psychology of music (North, Hargreaves 2008) that enables to explain the methodological specificity of the research on the effects of background music on consumers in the commercial environment.

Poziom opiekuńczości państwa a zachowania oszczędnościowe – analiza wielowymiarowa

The main goal of this paper is the analysis of the relation between the level of social security in chosen European countries and the propensity to save for retirement. The data for the analysis were taken from statistics databases of: OECD, Eurostat, World Bank and European Social Survey. The analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, correlations and taxonomic methods of classification. The output did not confirm the hypothesis that the higher level of social security was connected with a higher propensity to save. It turned out that the saving rates and the public pension expenses to private pension expenses ratio in more socially secure states were higher, and the citizens of less socially protective countries expected more state’s responsibility for the future pensions.

In the literature, the relationship between emotions and customer satisfaction is presented in different ways. One of them is treating the satisfaction as an emotional response to the product. Another way is the perception of emotions as a factor creating the level of perceived satisfaction. The purpose of this article is to present the possibility of using some of the multidimensional methods such as factor analysis or cluster analysis to analyze the relationship of emotions and customer satisfaction. The data used in the analyzes were collected during surveys conducted in three districts of Western Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Study regarding the Ethics of the Managers from the Municipal Sports Clubs in Romania

In this paper we conducted a survey to identify the ethics of the managers of sports clubs in Romania. Managers of sports clubs are those who are called upon to ensure the climate conducive to sports performance, in terms of ethics. The objective of the study was to assess the ethical levels of the managers from Romania. The study aims to analyze some ethical issues, such as: violence in sports, discrimination, use of prohibited substances and methods for increasing performance, results rigging, financial engineering, environmental degradation, exploitation of young people and encouraging victory at all cost. The work methodology involved a questionnaire-based study among six managers from three municipal clubs in Romania. The results show that ethical managers in Romania are high, respecting the ethics of both sports and management.

Some Conceptual Aspects of the Multilevel Modeling for the Study of Social-Economic Phenomena

Multilevel modeling has been mainly used in education research, health studies, psychology and sociology, its application to the study of social-economic phenomena and especially to business studies is rather scarce. Hence, its application to business studies might produce interesting new insights on business performance, especially due to the micro-macro interactions, for all the stakeholders. Therefore, the research is focused on business, namely to the analysis of the Romanian ICT sector. The current paper aims at illustrating a new assessment tool for business analysis, namely the assessment of company performance through a new approach called multilevel modeling. Given the nested structured of the database comprising the Romanian companies operating in ICT industry, a multilevel random coefficient model is suggested and how it can be fitted in R software. The conclusions of the research can be used by various stakeholders, including policy makers.

Study regarding Theatres' Role in Increasing Urban Competitiveness

The analysis of successful experiences in urban development shows that one important vector in increasing the popularity of a metropolis, so necessary in urban competition, is the "theatre-logo". "La Fenice" in Venice, Royal Theatre in Madrid, La Scala in Milan, "Globe" Theatre in London, Broadway the "Boulevard of theatres" in NewYork, "Bolshoi" Theatre in Moscow are not only places of cultural production, but true symbols of the city, mandatory points on the numerous tourists' maps. For Romania, and especially for Bucharest, the "I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre represents a true national cultural brand, one of the main generators of the country's cultural image. In the current context of the restoration and its consolidation, the present study confirms that the National Theatre can become a complex centre, unique in its own way, demonstrating a versatile cultural vocation, and increasingly contributing to the strategic development of Bucharest, beyond its well-known performances.

A Public Administration Based on Project Management

Applying specific techniques and tools of project management has become an important issue of concern in the context of New Public Management and a practice for the public administration reform and integration, in an expanded European context and particularly in the case of Romania, where projects of various sizes (national programs and strategies and sectoral policies) are implemented by different structures. This paper aims to examine the application and integration of the project management instruments and techniques in the Romanian public administration practice. The research objectives are: (1) to present and analyze the using of projects and project management by public administration, and (2) to identify the effects of implementing project management on the development of the organizational capacity of the public sector. This paper presents (1) the results obtained from the study of the relevant literature and (2) the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among civil servants with the purpose of identifying the effects of using project management in Romanian public administration.

Local Authority versus Local Public Utilities: A Governance Issue

Governance issues are fundamental in Local Public Utilities (LPUs) management. In recent decades, organisations providing Public Services in European countries are experiencing key changes in their governance system. At the same time, local authorities need to keep their control over LPU services in order to ensure coordination between different actors with different aims. Moreover, the complexities and dynamics of public service delivery require discretionary power, interaction, capacity building and trust. To this end new arrangements and new governance tools are required. The paper contributes to the overall debate on governance mechanisms in local public utilities in several ways. Firstly, we contribute to the debate on corporate governance in local public utilities by analysing the state of the art of the Italian context. The results highlight the need to strongly improve governance tools, which are at an embryonic stage. Secondly, they show that currently choice of governance tools employed is left to the initiative of each single administration and they are applied in a fragmentary and unsystematic way.

Ethical Values and the Human Resources Behaviour in Public Management

The role of ethical behaviour in public management is crucial for the public organizations’ results and for the citizens’ satisfaction. This idea is already demonstrated by several studies and the practitioners share it. There are limited knowledge about how the newly emerged politico-administrative dichotomy in the Balkans has influenced the formation of ethical behaviour along the management process and how this should be updated, taking into account that it is permanently influenced by regional cultures, by public managers and politicians. The main objectives of this paper are: (1) to identify some features of the human resources behaviour during the management process; (2) to underline the main reasons for unethical behaviour, (3) to identify some recommendations for creating and maintaining an ethically-oriented behaviour. The research methodology was based on questionnaire and included forty persons from the central government level. The paper concludes with some recommendations for improving the ethical behaviour of the human resources involved in the public management process at the central Romanian government.

Developing Public Managers’ English Language Communication Skills – Proposal for a Textbook Design and Evaluation Model

Design and evaluation of language teaching materials has given rise to many academic debates about the usefulness of such materials as well as of their role in the professional development of language teachers. Should professionals in the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) design their own materials or should they adopt published textbooks? The present study aims to contribute to such debates by proposing a set of materials design and evaluation criteria and arguing that there is a necessary link between the two stages in the process of developing teaching/learning materials. Reflecting on the process of designing an English for Public Administration textbook, an analysis is undertaken based on the criteria that informed the design of the textbook. The outcome of the analysis is an evaluation model that could prove relevant for the professional development of lecturers in ESP and could also inform the design and evaluation of textbooks in other disciplines.
