Keywords: the units of (a) language; morphology; vocabulary; semantics; pragmatics; cultural linguistics; historical linguistics; translation; comparative linguistics; the Russian language; the Czech language; the Croatian language
Summary/Abstract: The set of problems engaged in the texts which are presented in the monograph reflects the multifariousness of research perspectives in modern Slavic linguistics with reference to both traditional and novel methodological approaches.
The authors’ focus has to do with the problems of the description of the units of the Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech and Croatian languages at the particular levels of these languages. The linguistic units are examined not only as elements of a system but also as components (which are varied genre-wise) of early and modern texts. Apart from the analyses which draw from structuralist traditions there are also ones in which linguistic phenomena are considered in a broad social-political-cultural context.
The publication is a collection of pieces which are devoted both to one language as well as comparative studies: Polish-Russian, Polish-Czech, Polish-Croatian, Russian-Czech ones. There are also texts which are devoted to the problems of translatology.
The broad range of problems which are engaged by the authors from Poland and beyond enables the reader to familiarise himself or herself with the areas and trends of work conducted by the particular academic centres. We hope that it will also become a source of inspiration for further research endeavours.

- Keywords:word play; word formation; neologism; humor; Zhvanetskiǐ
- Summary/Abstract:In his works, Mikhail Mikhaĭlovich Zhvanetskiĭ frequently uses language play on the morphological level. It serves comic, expressive, and evaluative functions, simultaneously being a manifestation of authorial individualism. The object of this study is neosemanticisms and authorial neologisms. These linguistic innovations have been created by means of prefixes, prefixes and suffixes, reduction, compounding, substantivization, and contamination; some neologisms are mixed types. The unique expressiveness and vividness of the authorial neologisms based on the contrast with the base of the word allow him to play with meanings and consequently, achieve comic effects.

The examples for analysis were excerpted from literary works, national corpora of Polish and Russian, and websites. The metaphors of talent are found to be more varied. Among the metaphors of genius, spatial metaphors oriented „upward” prevail. When comparing Polish and Russian metaphors of talent and genius, more similarities than differences are noticed, unlike in the non-metaphorical constructions.

- Page Range:55-66
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:Czech language; Polish language; translation problems; translation equivalents; feminitives; female occupational terms; INTERCORP corpus
- Summary/Abstract:The following article concerns the issue of translation of Czech occupational feminitives into Polish. In the Czech language, the formation of feminine forms from masculine forms is common and systemic, whereas in the Polish language, certain forms are perceived as controversial by its native speakers. This may pose problems for translators from Czech into Polish. The article presents the results of the experiment aimed at an analysis of the translations of the three selected Czech occupational feminitives: ministryně, prezidentka, and řidička. These are the feminitives whose Polish translation equivalents: ministra (female minister), prezydentka (meaning the female head of state), and kierowczyni (female driver) are encountered mainly in the profeminist media and which were officially registered for the first time in „Słownik nazw żeńskich polszczyzny” (A Dictionary of Female Nouns in Polish) published in Wrocław in 2015. The linguistic corpus INTERCORP was used for the purpose of this experiment and excerption of research material.

- Author(s):Anna Iacovou
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:79-85
- No. of Pages:7
- Keywords:archival document; birth certificate; occupational title; suffix; word formation
- Summary/Abstract:The article concerns the archival documents prepared in the Russian language in Poland within the territory of the city of Łódź during 1910—1914. The source material is the birth certificates made in St. Ann’s Parish. The object of analysis is apellatives naming persons on account of their occupations. These include both suffix derivatives and morphologically unmotivated nouns, for instance закройщик, музык(ант), писарь, торговец, and сторож. Compounds such as электротехник and terms such as прядильный мастер occur rather seldom. Occasionally, the function of an occupational title is played by substantivized adjectives and participles, for instance пожарный, портной, and торгующий. The names of persons discussed in this article are semantically diversified and characterize, with more or less accuracy, persons on account of their occupation, trade, specific field of trade, specialization, performed function, etc. As a general rule, these appellatives pertain to fathers registering births of their children. Since these documents have been written out in longhand by Poles in the foreign language, many of the analyzed forms turn out to be only the phonetic equivalents of Polish words or the inventions of their authors. Lack of experience or bad language habits rooted in the authors’ memory translate into numerous spelling mistakes.

The collected material allows the conclusion that Russian and Polish borrowings used in social space serve communicating particular intentions and realizations of specific communicative goals. It is significant from the point of view of cultural comparative studies that the Polish-Russian relations are asymmetric from this aspect.

- Keywords:forms of address; linguistic communication; film dialogues; film translation
- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the difficulties in translating Polish forms of address in film dialogues based on the Russian translation of the series „Tajemnica twierdzy szyfrów” (The Secret of Code Fortress) (2007). Forms of address perform a significant role in linguistic communication. In film dialogues, they additionally carry information about relations between the characters, their position, and rank. In the process of film translation, forms of address are frequently omitted to shorten the translation due to technical requirements of captions or a voice-over. The analysis of the material shows that as a result of such processes, the recipient of translation is deprived of information which is indispensable for the true interpretation of the film.

- Keywords:indicators of cohesion; translator’s professional competence
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of selected genres in contractual law which is currently in operation in the Republic of Poland and the Russian Federation — contracts of commission, consignment and lease. The aim of the analysis was to indicate the ways of realization of cohesion in the above mentioned text genres. Four major indicators of cohesion were determined: the use of homogeneous verb forms, repetitions, conjunctions, and paralinguistic graphic means. The information about the determinants of textual cohesion and their functions can broaden the knowledge of the genre specificity of text. Such knowledge is useful for translators, who can consciously make use of means of cohesion specific for a genre, thereby improving the quality of translation and accelerating the translation process. The article also offers a review of contemporary linguistic studies on ways of achieving cohesion. These publications were a starting point for conducting this analysis.
