Summary/Abstract: This publication presents a collection of selected texts on territorial aspects of sustainability – including the natural, the political, the cultural and the economic ones. Complexity of development of sustainable territory is easier to be understood on the basis of examples highlighting diverse sustainability issues. The ongoing discussion concerning sustainable development includes differing ways of understanding the concept itself. Therefore the implementation of procedures and activities is often being shaped by diverse interpretations of theories of sustainable development. This volume is a result of a joint project of scholars from the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of University of Warsaw, Poland and academics from the University of Manizales, Colombia.

- Summary/Abstract:The achieved results of human cultural evolution, scientifi c and technologicaladvances have expanded the needs for the use of matter and energy, converting humangroups into consumerist societies eager for food, water, wood and energy, forcing a radicaltransformation of ecosystems, a situation aggravated by the current economic model, which seeks permanent economic growth and forgets the limits of the planet. The traditionalagronomic model imposed by the green revolution is useful on fl at terrain, but hasrestrictions on slopes, and now it shows confl icting results with regard to degradation, erosion, loss of natural ecosystems, decreased biodiversity and water pollution, with theaggravating factor that today the problems of world hunger have not been solved, thesafety of the food consumed is unknown, and adaptation to climate change is required.Agroecological knowledge can be considered as a mediator between conservation andthe necessary transformation of ecosystems for human survival on the planet Earth. Thisknowledge has multiple meanings, from productive systems of high economic interestmainly for export purposes even to socio-political movements that contrast with theglobalizing and neoliberal model. It is committed to rescuing ancestral knowledge, theconservation of soil and water, the promotion of diversity and resilient agroecosystems. Thus, it is assumed as a production system that improves health status of soils, ecosystemsand people, without the use of synthetic chemicals (biocides and fertilizers), andcombines ecological processes and biodiversity management benefi ting the environment.

However, practiceshows that this is not true, and that limiting it makes it very vulnerable. The function of the economic theory is to look for the c onnections that occur withdevelopment as an element able to avoid the depletion of the biophysical, cultural andnatural heritage.

- Summary/Abstract:The biofuels production in Colombia can be studied from three points of view:past, present and future. A review of the state of the art in the fi eld of clean energiesshows that the regulation in this regard is widely developed and the necessary legalmechanisms have been created to encourage the biomass production, which activelycontributes to the fulfi lment of international commitments against climate change andas a response to the depletion of fossil fuels. These three perspectives of analysis show that in Colombia, fi rst of all, there are importantantecedents in terms of normative regulation of biofuels.Secondly, the literature consulted shows that biofuels have advantages and disadvantages;for example, they reduce carbon monoxide emissions and they do not pollute water, buttheir production costs and ethanol corrosivity levels are high.Thirdly, we can see challenges regarding the biofuels production based on biomassesother than sugarcane.

- Page Range:103-114
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:sustainable development; modernity; territorial environmental management; energy effi ciency
- Summary/Abstract:Territorial environmental management emerges as a relatively new position toimplement, direct and control the environmentally sustainable processes of the industriesbased on their regional, social and political conditions as characteristics of each territory, which determine the degree of commitment and the same institutional capacity to implementenergy effi ciency processes that minimize environmental impacts and increase thepossibilities of development and quality of life for its inhabitants. The traditional conceptof sustainable development is based on developmentalist ideology that compromises theadvances that occur in the care of the environment and its relationship with the humanneeds for survival. From the theoretical point of view, it shows the need to transcendthis concept with regards to territorial environmental management and to reconcile theeconomic processes typical of modernity with the requirements of the planet and itsterritories as a constituent part of a greater whole.

- Keywords:mass removal processes; vegetation cover; geological materials susceptibility to landslides
- Summary/Abstract:Establishing the relationship between the occurrence of mass removal processesand the typology of geological materials and land cover, based on the diagnosticof events that occurred in the municipality of Dosquebradas, implied the consultation ofthe historical record of landslides and the realization of the inventory of mass removalprocesses in the territory of infl uence of the microbasin of the Dosquebradas stream. Thisaction allowed the identifi cation, location, diagnosis and descriptive statistical treatmentof the inventoried sites in order to defi ne some relationships of interest and confi rm thesubstantial role that vegetation and geological materials play in the stability of land. Someof the most representative fi ndings suggest that for the particular case of the microbasinof the Dosquebradas stream, the geological units most susceptible to the occurrenceof erosive events are the metamorphic rocks of the Kiea unit, the rocks and residualsoils of the Kvb volcanic unit, and deposits of recent alluvial origin. In addition, it wasverifi ed that the coverage with greater susceptibility to the occurrence of mass removalprocesses is that of grasses and stubble with some consociations and that together withhighly susceptible geological materials, they defi ne territorial zones with high threat dueto landslides.

- Summary/Abstract:This wor k deals with the study of social capital, understood as the existence ofsocial networks that facilitate the processes of cooperation and collective action, throughthe generation of trust between members of a community and other, external which youcan see by the existence of institutions that guarantee the fulfi llment of contracts andrespect for property rights. The study of institutions is also addressed as a fundamentalelement oriented to promoting the development of the capacity of the organizations tofl exibly adapt to different shocks and develop standards of formal and informal behaviourin the face of a highly competitive environment. This direction deals with the study of institutions as an important factor in the exchangeprocesses, establishing differentiation and the similarities between institutions and organizations,in the same way an analysis of the neoclassical economics and the neoinstitutionalistapproach is carried out in relation to the operation of markets and its infl uenceon the emergence of transaction costs in the processes of human exchange, which historicallyhave given rise to the creation of organizations in cases in which contracts carriedout under market conditions imply higher costs with respect to the transactions withinan organization. The paper also discusses the approaches of the neoinstitutionalist theory in relation tocontracts as a relevant institution that can promote or block cooperation in exchange,as a substantive institution through which it is specifi ed what type of property rightscan be transferred and on what terms, and as a generator of incentives involving agentsin all types of transactions. In this way, the study presents an approach to the importanceof the institutionalist and neinstitutionalist theory in the development of the theory oforganizations.

- Keywords:borders; peripheral regions; South America; La Quiaca – Villazón
- Summary/Abstract:Each border area is a zone of cultural, economic, and political differences. In the nations of the Global South, whose colonial past has resulted in very strong internaldivisions, border regions have often become real barriers to development, as well asto social and economic interactions between neighbouring countries. Local populationsare thus interested in opening up borders, in the free movement of people and goods, and in investment in border regions. Such a perception of a border often confl icts withoffi cial state policy. The Argentine-Bolivian border undoubtedly represents a border of inequality betweenthe two neighbouring countries. On one side, there is one of the wealthiest countriesin South America – Argentina; and on the other one of the continent’s poorest – Bolivia.Adding to that are conditions specifi c to the Andes, present on either side of theborder. North-West Argentina is in turn the poorest region of that country. Indeed, inboth cases the border regions form part of the geographical and economic peripheries ofthese neighbouring countries, a circumstance that the nature of the border also shapes.

- Summary/Abstract:As the feasting trend is rising in popularity, studies on characteristics of feastplaces are necessary. Particularly interesting examples of feast places are market halls.Scattered through Europe during the 19th and 20th century, they were originally buildto facilitate trade organization, meet sanitary standards and enhance local eminency.Nowadays, it is common for market halls to be renovated and reorganized. Recently mosttalked about Warsaw’s market hall revival is that of Koszyki market hall (Hala Koszyki),which was completed in 2016. Formerly serving the purpose of neighbourhood’s marketplaceand melting pot, now became a place fi lled with fancy restaurants and shopswhich seem to be dedicated to a somewhat limited clientele. In order to determine the true opinion of Koszyki market’s users, a survey was conductedin 2017. The venue’s general reception is found to be positive. However, whatis worrisome, is the opinion that Koszyki market is a place dedicated to young, trendyVarsovians. It was an impression that was frequently voiced while completing the surveyand during conversation. Further observations need to be made, as it is possible thatgentrifi cation processes near Koszyki market hall have already triggered.

- Summary/Abstract:Social capital (CS) can be defi ned as the capacity for social collaborationbetween different people for the benefi t of a group or colective, which is based on threemain sources: affection, mutual trust and concerted and effective rules that favor thedevelopment of social networks. These variables known theoretically for several years, but little have been determined in the heart of rural communities, much less have developedstrategies that favor their development in favor of promoting processes of linkageand technology transfer, which in rural daily life of various production systems (SP) andpanela are expressed through rejection and not technological adoption. Then, being partof the development of the community CS in the SP cane panela is also the responsibilityof agricultural technicians who are part of various productive intervention projectsfi nanced by the Colombian state through various sources. Based on this understanding, the results expressed in this article serve as a refl exive guide for other research groupsthat in the future perform SP interventions in the Colombian rural sector.
