- Summary/Abstract:The images of the social world functioning in the public space differ not only on the level of directly expressed content, but also on the basis of which rules have been used in their construction and on what constructions they are consequently supported. The purpose of the text is to present three types of such constructs. In their description, the distinction between the map and landscape is used as two cognitive perspectives from which a man can describe social reality.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the changes in existing models of media representation. The development of particular technologies and the evolution of ways of functioning of images in the contemporary media sphere led to the erosion of the paradigm of representation. The main factor contributing to the process of redefinition of the typical representationism is post‑media: technologies combining digital code, IT data, physical space (where the data circulates) and human activities realstes to the spheres mentioned above (primarily thanks to mobile applications).

- Summary/Abstract:The article concerns the possibility of describing multimodal messages in the context of their autopresentational potential. After presenting the theoretical foundations an analysis of an extract of multimodal discourse will be carried out, which consists of pieces of content of the official Facebook page belonging to Angela Merkel. Examining the selected language and visual messages aims to illustrate the methodological solutions adopted for their suitability in decoding the autopresentational strategy. The key for the verification of the method are the findings on (1) the way in which particular semiotic systems are used to implement communication strategies; (2) the degree of translation of meaning from one semiotic system to another within a given self‑presentation technique; and (3) the contribution that particular modalities have to be made in the creation of a holistic (i.e. based on all semiotic resources used to create a communicative sense) image of a public person.

- Summary/Abstract:The Digital Humanities i s a widely c onsidered p henomenon i n t he c ontemporary d iscursive space. The consistent definition of the DH is still absent and establishing its characteristic features, boundaries, and the scope of this idea is still pending. Thus, the aim of this article is an attempt to study the ways of representation and conceptualisation of this currently trendy name used in texts of the Polish language academic discourse. The discursive perspective that was adopted during the exploration of the collected sources enabled the authors to distinguish the crucial features of the Digital Humanities. What is more, the evolutionary and open nature of the discussed conceptual category were proved. The DH seems to transcend the frameworks of academic discourse whose identification is based on the institutional criterion of reference.

(Self‑discourse and its updates in the texts)
- Author(s):Janina Labocha
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:70-77
- No. of Pages:8
- Summary/Abstract:The subject of the consideration is the personal diary as a daily practice of the diarist recording his experiences, thoughts and observations. The author of the journal can be an ordinary person, but also a known, public person. Then the update of the discourse about oneself and its characteristics becomes a more complex process. The question arises as to what idea accompanied the author of the diary, or when creating the text, assumed the possibility of its future publication. In the case of dailies, written with a view to possible publication, the manuscript often shows traces of later corrections or additions by a diarist, who, reading a text written some time ago, corrects or deletes what he currently likes from the perspective of the passage of time. Publishing a journal in the form of a book includes a second author in the process of updating the discourse, who, as an editor, selects the manuscript material and supplements it with footnotes, comments, editorial notes, which as a result causes that a private discourse about oneself becomes highly public

(The world of commands, prohibitions and obligations)
- Author(s):Ewa Malinowska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:78-84
- No. of Pages:7
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the paper is to present the features of a certain image of the world, i.e. the world of legal texts. Their basic function is to create an ideal world of obligations and control the behaviours of recipients. The peculiarity of the legal world is the dominance of the impersonal point of view, which is related, inter alia, to the understanding of the legislator as the creator of legal texts. Statements of directives, i.e. statements that obligate or prohibit directly certain entities to behave in certain circumstances in certain ways are characteristic for the legal world. Another peculiarity is the time that runs in a different way than in the world of everyday experience. This is due to the fact that legal texts design future events, refer to future events. Therefore the statements in which legal norms are coded are formulated in the future tense, and the verbs used in such statements most often perform a directive function.

- Author(s):Maria Wojtak
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:85-96
- No. of Pages:14
- Summary/Abstract:Making a generally adopted assumption about genre and discursive character of each text the author analyses the publication: abp Grzegorz Ryś, Różaniec, Kraków 2018. The genre identity of the text does not raise any doubts. Yet the problem arises when establishing the discursive identity. Inclusion of the publication within the religious discourse poses a risk of setting too wide an interpretative perspective. The author puts forward a hypothesis about the coincidence of two discourses — the discourse of prayer and the evangelizing discourse. In the analytical part of the article the author reflects upon the manner of the author’s construction of the discourse world in the framework of the evangelization mission. This function if fulfilled by the formative components of the rosary. The researcher focuses on a few categories that build this world, and thus the role of the Gospel (or, more broadly, of the word of God), a vision of God and man, shaped within a dogmatically programmed framework, explained and approximated to the recipient.

- Summary/Abstract:The author discusses social reactions to the rape on the Polish woman in Rimini in August 2017. The analysis of the texts in four opinion‑forming weeklies shows different distribution of accents in the interpretation of the event and extremely different worlds of values, which are a sign of a different understanding of the THE OTHER category. Although the assessment of the incident was the same in different environments, it led to a dispute and its dichotomization.

- Author(s):Marzena Makuchowska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:126-139
- No. of Pages:14
- Summary/Abstract:The article shows the increased presence of the image of the evil world i n t he c ontemporary Polish Catholic discourse. Teaching about the evil nature of this world (earthly, temporal) belongs to the theological truths of Christianity, but the fearful, pessimistic image of reality is also a means of combating phenomena, ideas, etc. unaccepted by the Church. The author limited her analysis to the word world and its closest lexical vicinity, which evaluates this concept negatively. They are: adjectives such as de‑Christianized, impious; vocabulary that creates an image of the world’s activity in doing evil, a world subject to degradation, a place where bad things happen, a world that needs God’s mercy, rescue and change, etc. The presence of this image is on the one hand a convenient rhetorical measure that organizes a sermon, and on the other — a manifestation of the continuation of the dichotomous language that divides into its own and enemies. The negative image of the world (and Europe) also serves to maintain the autostereotype of good, Catholic Poland.

(What are moral axioms and attitudes exercising influence over the Polish discourse about economy?)
- Author(s):Irena Szczepankowska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:153-166
- No. of Pages:14
- Summary/Abstract:The author of the paper specifies two ideological types of the contemporary Polish discourse about economy, that is observed in the media. They are called capitalist and anti‑capitalist types and treated as two idealized models with their more or less typical variations. The aim of this paper is to indicate the crucial values governing the moral attitudes of the discourse participants. The author points out the opposite moral perspectives. For the Polish supporters of capitalist economy, the hard work understood as an individual activity is the most important value that determines moral axioms, such as: “A person who works hard should be justly rewarded, and the one who is lazy should be punished”, so the wealth and the poverty are morally justified. For the opponents, who appreciate mostly the welfare state, a fair economic system can guarantee the prosperity to all citizens by making demands, such as: “The rich people should share their wealth with the poor”.

- Summary/Abstract:The work concerns the problem of text structure determinants described as the features of Polish academic discourse at a stage of its forming during the period of 16th.—17th. centuries. The analysis covered the ways of putting the information in order on three main text levels: the order of text frame; the global order; the local order. The research proved that many of features present in ancient academic discourse are typic for academic discourse at a stage of its stability, too. However, some of them one should connect with the epoch culture, as well as with the editorial rules of ancient printed texts.

(How do (Internet) memes remember?)
- Author(s):Marta Wójcicka
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:196-210
- No. of Pages:15
- Summary/Abstract:The goal of the article — which title refers to a monograph of one of classics of the collective memory theory Paul Connerton ‘How societies remember’ — is an attempt to show methods of remembering and modelling collective memory in Internet memes, which — according to the author — determine discussion with the official political and media discourse. Collective memory is understood as an included in cultural texts image of the past of a particular social group (Wójcicka 2014), which affects the perception of the present and future of that group. Internet memes are memory carriers. By using visual and verbal means of expression they function in collective memory due to practices of recording and implementation. The paper answers the question: how is the past remembered/memorized/reminded/forgotten in memes?

- Summary/Abstract:The author presents the ways of creating (preserving) the community of sports fans by sports commentators. Such a community is identified with the national community, but only in a certain aspect of reality. It is exemplified by the usage of the inclusive “we”, its emotional convention and references to the national symbols. This way all the Poles are included in the community of sports fans. This community is ephemeral — constructed only for the time of the TV broadcast — but also renewable — it is reconstructed during successive broadcasts.

Television discourses contain and shape various images of social reality, refer to different representations, also regarding the different ideas about the function of the medium: as a window, mirror and watchdog on the one hand (Superstacja), on the other (TV Republika) — as teacher, guide, signpost. The article consists of three parts: the first presents the theory of social representations, the second part refer to essence of media images of social representations in relation to the discursive image of the world, the third part analyses the mechanisms of anchoring and objectification as ways to construct media discourses, as well as shape images of objects of reality and the underlying them social representations.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to present the image of the world and a particular social group (young employees of corporations), created by the author of a Facebook profile and satirical texts published in the Do Rzeczy weekly magazine. At face value, the profile and the texts praise political correctness and (neo)liberalism, but in reality, they treat them ironically. The heroes of the stories and their narrator use a sociolect parodying “corpo‑speech” and the manner in which the “left‑wing” media present reality. There are also numerous allusions to current political and cultural events, which are presented subjectively, humorously and with stylistic virtuosity.

- Summary/Abstract:To approach the epistemologically exceptional phenomenon of the way in which young people participate in the world of electronic media, we reach towards Anna Cieplak’s novel It Has to Be Swept Clean (2016) to describe its literary and textual mechanisms. We present a catalogue of the most important phenomena which seem to characterize the world of “gimbaza” (young people in the 13 to 15 age bracket) concentrating on the novel’s title, the titles of particular chapters as well the typographical design of the page. We also analyze the electronic world sociolect used by the characters of the novel with such its features as abbreviations, heavy impact of the English language, neologisms and eliptical‑visual communication. The analysis of the material allows for the conclusion that literary discourse preserves its ability to transcendit own boundaries thus revealing its potential for both hybridization of literary structure and intensification of the language itself.
