- Summary/Abstract:The Chinese became interested in Poland and Polish culture at the beginning of the 20th century, at the turning point in the history of Poland and the Middle Kingdom. The first Polish philologists were educated in the 1950s. Today, a dozen or so academic centres in China offer Polish studies. In the 21st century another breakthrough events happen, which stimulate mutual interest: on the one hand, Poland joins the European Union, on the other hand, the Chinese strategy “One Belt, One Road” is implemented. As the relations between the two countries strengthen, young Chinese become more and more interested in Polish language and culture. The author of this text was able to observe this phenomenon when she worked as a lecturer of Polish as a foreign language at Beijing International Studies University (2000–2005) and at China Foreign Affairs University (2014–2018).

The growing migration between Poland and China, tourist and economic enterprises and an interest in learning Polish in China contribute to searching for what is common to build mutual understanding by learning history and culture both countries share. Talking about Polish history in Manchuria is also “claiming rights” – as the popular stereotype in the world and in China has Harbin as a Russian city. The author deliberates to what extent the phenomenon of Harbin, a city with traces of Polish citizens, can be an impulse that will prompt the development of Polish studies there.

They show to what extent nationality and culture of the writers determine their style of communication. The factors influencing a given style can be found in the education system, hierarchy of values, philosophy of modern behaviours. The article shows this influence on the basis of four chosen phenomena: mentality and the hierarchy of values, presentation of Poland, presentation of Polish history, the use of stylistic devices. Comparative studies of the organisation of texts and their language can be used in contrastive textology, show rhetorical interferences and the exchange of linguistic and stylistic conventions between languages. They can also aid lectures in foreign languages in teaching written and spoken language.

- Summary/Abstract:The author presents selected problems of Chinese – Polish intercultural communication from a university didactics perspective. The text is the result of the cooperation between Warsaw University and Sichuan University in Chengdu. The observations included in the article summarise 30-hour-courses in intercultural communication, which I taught in English to Chinese students at Sichuan University and in Polish to Chinese students, who followed Polish+ programme at Warsaw University. Even though there were major cultural and communication differences, communicating with Chinese students during the course proved to be effective and free of intercultural conflicts. It required, however, paying more attention to communication and, above all, breaking high context communication i.e. messages conveyed with the use of polite forms, questions, paraphrases, which prevented understatements. As both sides were open to cultural differences and empathic, it was easier to achieve the goal.
