Visualization in teaching, as a method of universal communication and a simple message understood by all people, in the conditions of crises in the modern world, and especially in the era of current migrations, is indispensable also in Polish schools. The study outlines the most critical problems faced by teachers teaching Polish as a second language and then presents various options and advantages of incorporating image/imagery into the education of children with a migration experience, incl. picture dictionaries, drawing techniques, mnemonics (link method, chain method, mental map) and a sketch note. Regardless of the universality of visual thinking, the study proves that these techniques, strategies, and methods have a resounding justification for teaching Polish as the second language.

Nauczanie i uczenie się języków obcych w kontraście z językami wschodniosłowiańskimi... w opinii Słowian wschodnich – raport z badań

The paper presents the results of research conducted on a sample of 30 respondents from the East who learn Polish as a foreign language. The research aims at determining the respondents’ opinions on the special didactic procedure, which is teaching the second language in contrast to the learners’ first language. The paper demonstrates the findings about the respondents’ actual and declared levels of proficiency, the correspondence between languages (the degree of correspondence according to the respondents), and also the advantages and possible problems with teaching foreign languages with the use of the contrastive approach.

Nauczanie języka polskiego jako obcego w grupie Słowian południowych... – postulaty programowe

The opening of the borders of the European Union and increasing the number of its members resulted in higher amount of students from the countries of the former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria studying at Polish universities. South Slavs often do not realize the similarity of all Slavic languages. The article presents selected methodological suggestions for planning courses for South Slavs, which would take into account these similarities. However, one should not forget that language similarities can be a source of mistakes: transfer from related languages is also an issue to which the author dedicated a place in her work.

Od języka podstawowej komunikacji do języka szkolnej edukacji... – zarys procesu nabywania polszczyzny w warunkach szkolnych na przykładzie nastoletnich chińskich uczniów

The article presents the reflection and the data gathered for the Ph.D. thesis “Chinese students in the Polish educational system – from basic communication to cognitive academic language proficiency skills” presents the specificity of teaching Polish as a second language to young people (12–13 years old) who come from the distant culture and countries. The first part is a brief outline of the Chinese migration in Poland, with particular emphasis on the youngest generation of migrants. The second part of the paper showed the methodology and analysis of the conducted research with conclusions that enabled to answer the research questions. The article the examples of suggestions that may presumably enforce the process of teaching Polish in school conditions by students with experience of migration.

Podejście zadaniowe w kształceniu świadomości kultury własnej Chińczyków... uczących się języka polskiego

Young Chinese who undertake Polish studies show great interest in Polish culture. In glottodidactics, acquiring intercultural competence is achieved by integrating language learning with getting to know the entire cultural context. To develop this competence, it is necessary to be aware of one’s own culture and the ability to interpret it in the context of a foreign culture. The article is an attempt to indicate such methods of working with Chinese students, which thanks to a pragmatic approach to their own culture, motivate students to get to know it more deeply, and allow them to see the relationship between their native and foreign culture.

Student w roli słuchacza na zajęciach języka polskiego jako obcego

The purpose of this article is to verify what communication roles the learner of Polish as a foreign language plays in improving listening skills (and in which communication systems). The author, referring to the concepts of Michel Rost and Denis McQuail, analyzes teaching tasks and correlated texts present in three selected coursebooks for A2 level. The research shows that the teaching tasks do little to prepare learners for authentic listening in natural communicative contexts: students play little differentiated roles in only two systems. In the author’s view, listening instruction should be consciously and deliberately planned for the sake of authenticity and functionalism in PFL teaching.

K principům jazykového poradenství: Projekt TELMER 2023–2024

The TELMER Project (2023–2024), led by the Institute of the Estonian Language and co-solved by the Institute for the Czech Language, aimed to map language consulting activities across various countries, enhance the competencies of language workers through professional training, and establish universally accepted standards for language consulting. The project also sought to create a network for language consultants to share experiences and improve service quality. Key activities included the development and distribution of a questionnaire, personal meetings of Czech and Estonian linguists, and a training program focused on communication strategies and problem-solving. The project culminated in the formulation of a general standard for language consulting and plans for an association of consulting centers.

Plesmeřisko: poznámky k jednomu okazionalismu

The paper deals with the word plesmeřisko, attested in a collection of Moravian short stories from the 19th century. This word with unclear meaning was found to be a nonce word, i.e., a word unattested in other sources. It may be an augmentative derived from the dialect word plezmero (with the original meaning ‘unbottened shirt’, hence ‘bare chest’, later used as a derogatory word especially for a disheveled, lazy woman). The word plezmero is a compound consisting of the unclear second element -mero and the first component plez-, which originates in the Czech verb plazit (se) (‘to creep, crawl’). Other dialect words with the root plez-/plaz- are explored in a synchronic and diachronic perspective.

These are the regulations on the immutability of surnames (1770), on the inheritance of surnames (1786) and on the binding form of surnames (1886). U Krakowu je u 83. godini života preminuo 29. studenoga 2021. akademik, prof. dr. sc. Wiesław Boryś, vrstan poljski znalac hrvatskoga jezika i čakavskoga narječja te veliki prijatelj hrvatskoga naroda. Wiesław Boryś je rođen 4. siječnja 1939. u kotaru Kielce, u mjestu Bzin (sada dio mjesta Skarżysko-Kamienna) gdje je u to doba njegov otac radio na željeznici. Roditelji su mu bili Stefan i Marianna Boryś (rođ. Ziółkowska). Nakon djedove smrti roditelji su mu se vratili u selo Borszowice, rodno mjesto njegova otca, koje je blizu grada Sędziszowa u jędrzejowskom kotaru świętokrzyskoga vojvodstva. U tom kraju je pohađao škole, odrastao i sazrijevao. Inače, taj je kraj središte poljskoga jezika i kulture, značajan i za povijest poljske književnosti jer je u obližnjim Nagłowicama u 16. stoljeću živio i stvarao Mikołaj Rej, otac poljske književnosti pa bi se moglo reći da je mladom Wiesławu bilo sudbinski predodređeno baviti se filologijom.

Semantyka „szarości“ w języku młodzieży polskiego pochodzenia w Wilnie

The article aims to reveal the concept of GRAY in the sociolect of Polish youth in Vilnius. The semantic analysis of the gray name szary is carried out against the background of the standard Polish language. The main task is to show what meanings accompany the name of this color in the respondents’ questionnaires and how they connote the world of non-linguistic reality. The conducted research shows that the respondents’ answers partially do not coincide with the definitions and connotations presented in the subject literature. For example, the prototypical associations with ash typical of Polish dictionaries did not appear in the questionnaires. However, in both varieties of the Polish language, the color gray is associated with natural phenomena (evening, clouds, rainy weather) and animals (mouse, hare, wolf, elephant, etc.). Differences are noticeable when it comes to the emotional component of the semantics of grayness: both negative (sadness, depression, failure, etc.) and positive (calmness, elegance, high class) connotations of the word szary ‘gray’ are characteristic of the youth sociolect, which emphasizes the greater ambivalence of the semantics of this term, compared to the situation in standard Polish.

IE *-KWE ‘AND; IF’ IN SLAVIC LANGUAGES

The article examines the origin and functional development of the Slavic conjunction ače ‘if; although’ (OPol. acz). The marker of the protasis in conditional clauses was the enclitic *-če, which continues the function of IE *-kwe ‘and; if’. Thus, Sl. *-če ‘if’ is an archaism and may be compared with corresponding forms in Indo-Iranian, Hittite, and Latin. The concessive ače ‘although’ evolved from conditional concessive clauses. Wskaźnik nominalności jako element stylistycznej charakterystyki polskich reportaży książkowych z lat 2004–2019

The most characteristic feature of each text regarding the frequency of parts of speech is the participation of nouns and verbs in it. The quantitative relationship between these two classes of words determines the level of nominalization, which can be calculated using the nominalization indicator (Wn). Its value is obtained from the sum of nouns divided by the sum of verbs in the text. The more verbs in relation to nouns, the more dynamic, spontaneous, and far from the orderly written Polish language the text is. The analysis of in contemporary Polish book reportages was conducted against a comparative background of 27 text types – spoken and written. Some of the reportages represent nominal styles (Wn > 3.0) and others present verbal styles (Wn < 1.5). Most texts, however, should be categorized as intermediate styles (1.5 ≤ Wn ≤ 3.0). This group includes the vast majority of the existing contemporary book reportages (the average value of Wn = 1.8), stretched between the life and dynamics of the description of facts and the intellectualization of their interpretation, which manifests itself in nominalization.

Wyrażenia z kwaziapozycjami w najdawniejszej polszczyźnie

The article describes Old Polish constructions containing expressions and phrases constituted around such elements as name, for name, mentioned, czusz, word, i.e., e.g. high mountain for the name of Tabor; said area Zakrzewo; in the city, his name is Kamon. As has been proven, they largely imitated typical groups with appositive adjectives. In many cases, they were used interchangeably in texts, e.g. follower, czusz Jan / follower Jan; the river’s name is Jijon/Jijon River; on the mountain of Gilead/toward the mountain of Gilead. Due to the peculiarities of their structure and specific syntactic limitations, the analyzed constructs gradually go out of use in relation to the expansive and hitherto exploited appositional groups. Their use was not favoured by their analytic structure and the complexity of the duplication of the syntactic scheme. They relied on a greater number of components than synthetic appositions. The expressions described in the article functioned mainly in medieval Polish, but, for example, a proper name was still found in the 17th century, and the proper name was also found in modern Polish. In the literature, phrases such as czusz / toczusz, to jest or słowie were sometimes treated as appositions. However, due to the definitional features of appositional groups, they should be excluded from this set.
