Signs and Emotions as the Experience of the Urban Explorer

Although we have the impression that we understand the urban texture in which we live, the city still holds surprises in the way it communicates everyday aspects, situations, and cultural history.The experience of the urban explorer, that flâneur/stroller mentioned by Guy Debord (1955) and the Situationist school, was until recently only a literary experience. The emotion of discovering the unusual in the urban daily life was communicated only in the form of textual narratives (Sinclair, 1997). Recently the psychogeographical approach to the city has become again a topic of interest. Although contemporary design transposed the behavioral codes of urban life into signs, it did not propose emoticons for the phenomenological experience of one who experiences the city.The original purpose of this paper is to translate the phenomenological experience of the urban explorer into infographics (which translates complex concepts into signs with condensed meaning) and to quantify and communicate emotionally and visually, the experience of the "invisible" [out of sight] cultural details to the hurried passerby.This paper will discuss the phenomenological (psychogeographical) experience of the city transferred into visual signs will be presented. The authors insist on the communicative value of infographics in making visible the hidden beauty of the city, the historical and esthetical details that are not seen by the passersby on the street, proposing a new urban visual language accompanied by visual design theory and cultural history explanations.

Monitoring i ewaluacja procesów rewitalizacji miast

Cities, however, are in a constant state of flux and today - in a period of intense, dynamic geopolitical and socio-economic change - face many problems. Local authorities, reborn during the period of political transformation, found themselves in a situation in which it was in the interest of the inhabitants to take comprehensive measures for city development, urban regeneration. Urban regeneration is an integrated process, combining spatial, environmental and technical measures with programmes for the economic and social revitalisation of degraded urban spaces. Local authorities have a wide range of instruments at their disposal for urban regeneration policy and can actively shape the urban regeneration process. However, a system of monitoring and evaluation is particularly important for the planning and coordination of urban regeneration activities. Monitoring and evaluation are key instruments in the management of r urban regeneration processes. The aim of the chapter is to present monitoring and evaluation as one of the key instruments at the disposal of local government units for planning and stimulating r urban regeneration processes in Polish cities. The chapter presents both the principles and criteria for building monitoring and evaluation systems in urban regeneration programmes, together with their practical application.

This is theoretical work for better understanding what Sarajevo is today. Since the focus is on contemporary society, our work begins with the concept of the rhizome, which Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari used as a metaphor to explain the nature of knowledge, information, and social relation. This concept applied information age defined in works Manuel Castells. The rise of the networking society, they application in actual life in town. In this work after highlighted some od phenomena of the world today analyzing urban layers in memories of the Sarajevo, from period when Sarajevo establishing, when ottoman empire era rule in Bosnia, Austro-Hungarian period, and rule in the both Jugoslav era and finely, and finely reflex on post-Dayton position like capital town in independent state BIH, and what that happen in space. One part of our analyzing is to discover what kind of the rule was dominate in history of the town. Very important focus in this work is to clear fined definition, what is Sarajevo today, and why this city, lost your competition like town and disappear in concept the Canton Sarajevo. We are try to find reason of that position the town in organization today, and try to give some suggestion, how to find some solution for better thinking about the city region. Today is divided town, and we have to try to find solution for charismatic position in the future of the town. It will be imagination, like tools which help to find light in the end.

Gorazd Čelechovský: Města jako systémy

Za socialismu se mezi československými architekty pohybovala dnes již téměř zapomenutá postava. Člověk, který jako by nepatřil do své doby. Jako by v sobě chtěl spojit romantika z konce 19. století s vědcem 21. století. Gorazd Čelechovský (1922–1991) hledal cesty, jak zachránit civilizaci před hrozícím kolapsem, a snažil se pomocí architektury, vědy a počítačů vytvořit systém osídlení, který by fungoval v harmonii s přírodou. Ač sám odsuzoval nereálné urbanistické utopie, i on je z dnešního pohledu vizionářem, jehož projekty mohly být realizovány jen výjimečně.

SYMBOLICKÉ TOPOGRAFIE PRAHY V DLOUHÉM 19. STOLETÍ: KONTINUITA A ZMĚNA V PROCESU MODERNIZACE

During the 19th century, Prague, the capital of Bohemia, became a major travel destination. A body of more than 160 extant travel guides bears witness to this development. Drawing on memory studies and modernization theory, this essay examines these travel guides to trace the changes of collective memory in the Central European urban setting at a time of dynamic change. This essay argues that the canon of Prague’s most important sights already existed in the early 19th century and its presence thus predated the emergence of the first modern travel guides. While the canon of Prague’s must-see sites remained surprisingly stable during the ‘long 19th century’, the collective memories attached to Prague’s spaces underwent a pronounced transformation. The ‘symbolic topography’ (M. Halbwachs) of Prague established on local Bohemian patriotism and associated most notably with the Vormärz Prague’s middle classes, disintegrated in the second half of the century. It eventually gave place to the conflicting collective memories of the Czech and German nationalist intelligentsia. Furthermore, the collective memories of various religious and professional groups also began to be articulated publicly and became accessible to travellers. A plurality of collective memories existing in the public sphere thus emerged as symbolic of modern open societies. All these memories, however, remained intrinsically linked to the same spaces of the historical city. The essay thus reveals the ambiguity of the relationship between diverse memories and spaces: while their content draws boundaries between individual groups, their form binds these communities together..

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN READING, WRITING, LISTENING AND SPEAKING SKILLS IN TERTIARY EDUCATION: THE CASE OF THE STUDENTS OF ARCHITECTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALY IN GREECE

This paper probes into the second language learning needs of first and second year university students who are studying architecture at the University of Thessaly, Greece. More specifically it examines the texts which have been chosen and appropriately prepared for the specific purpose of teaching English for Academic Purposes. It also examines the teaching of writing skills to the aforementioned students, with an emphasis on coherence, development, appropriate use of the terminology learnt and readability. Oral language practice, especially the oral use of the terminology and language which has been taught and learnt during the course of the lesson will also be looked into. The article also reports upon the creation of a genuine need for tertiary education students to communicate in English using the terminology and language learnt. This paper rounds off with the presentation and use of authentic videos, listening exercises and written material which the presenter of the paper (and teacher of ESP/EAP) has produced and used.

Architektonická súťaž na operu Štátneho divadla z rokov 1958 až 1959 v Ostrave

Masívna bytová výstavba v päťdesiatych rokoch v mestskej časti Poruba so sebou priniesla nutnosť sústrediť pozornosť i na architektonické a urbanistické riešenie ulice, ktorá tvorila jej hlavnú spojnicu s Moravskou Ostravou, a to bývalej Gottwaldovej triedy, dnes ulice 28. října. Významu ulice malo zodpovedať i veľkorysé a reprezentatívne riešenie v podobe bulváru, ktorý ústil do tzv. Slávnostného priestoru, kde rozšírený úsek ulice nadobúdal charakter námestia a mala ho tvoriť séria stavieb občianskej vybavenosti celomestského významu.

Bytová výstavba v Místku — sídliště Riviéra

Následující příspěvek je vybrán z diplomové práce na téma Bytová výstavba Frýdku-Místku v období 1950–1990, zachycující toto město z pohledu urbánního vývoje, vzniku a utváření bytového fondu i jeho příslušenství a v neposlední řadě se zaměřujícího na etapy výstavby významných frýdecko-místeckých sídlišť. Samotný příspěvek se zaměřuje na přelomové období šedesátých let v kontextu a postojích dobové výstavby. Soustřeďuje se především na situaci městské části Místek, která ve Frýdku-Místku prošla zásadní proměnou jako první vybudováním sídliště Riviéra a dalších. Na vzhledu tohoto sídliště, vystavěného v letech 1963 až 1968, jsou patrny vlivy desetiletí zrající urbanistické praxe a názorů na organizaci sídlišť s úplně vybavenými obytnými celky, zajišťujícími komfort jeho obyvatel.

Vybavení a výzdoba budovy bývalého Federálního shromáždění

Budova bývalého Federálního shromáždění se nachází v centru Prahy vedle Národního muzea. Vznikla razantní přestavbou areálu bývalé Pražské burzy peněžní a zbožní, ve kterém tou dobou sídlil parlament. Architektonická soutěž na ni proběhla roku 1966. Vítězně z ní vyšel návrh autorského kolektivu, který tvořil Karel Prager, Jiří Kadeřábek a Jiří Albrecht. Požadavkem soutěže bylo zachování objektu burzy z třicátých let od architekta Jaroslava Rösslera. Zároveň ale bylo třeba vytvořit dostatečné množství prostor vhodných pro parlamentní provoz. Tyto v podstatě protichůdné nároky vedly Karla Pragera (1923 –2001) k odvážnému architektonickému řešení. Nad starou budovu burzy vyzdvihl téměř autonomní kancelářskou budovu. Nástavba byla vytvořena z tzv. Vierendeelových nosníků, které se používaly při stavbě mostů. Tyto nosníky byly uloženy na čtyřech kloubech ve tvaru přesýpacích hodin, které vyrovnávají rozpínání kovové konstrukce vlivem tepla.
