The art of ambiguity

In this article is analyzed Lindita Ahmeti’s poetry which differs by the high level of figurativeness, which expands and is shaped within a vast network of references. These references, in broad lines, are divided into three types: 1. References from mythology, 2. References from history, and 3. References from culture. Ahmeti is an accomplished poet whose poetry has the essential characteristics that a genuine poet should have, such as sensitivity, linguistic baggage, motivation of symbolic words, the unique construction of poetics, or the ability to build a poetic identity, these characteristics that place Lindita worthy among the most appreciated Albanian poets.

Manjola’s unique world

Construction of the Image of Persons with Disabilities in Latvian Mass Media

Reality construction on the Internet is an inseparable part of human lives. On one hand, many people choose to construct their own (fake) realities. On the other hand, several groups of society are affected by the realities built by the mass media. Not everything published online can be considered journalism; however, professional journalism has an important role in moulding public opinion. Thus, the functions of the media should not only be considered but also exploited deliberately and purposefully. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The article is devoted to the analysis of the contents and linguistic features of the articles about people with disabilities published on one of the most popular news websites in Latvia – jauns.lv. The results show that both content and linguistic choices, although they are mainly unintentional, can produce and propagate misconceptions about people with disabilities. Yet the solutions targeting this issue are to be determined.

This article reviews the published studies on visual precedence (pre-existing visual phenomena), which is a relatively new subject of linguistic research. It is shown that the active growth of the conceptual and terminological system related to visual precedence is accompanied by terminological ambiguities in defining pre-existing visual phenomena, by a lack of unanimity and contradictory reasoning about their forms in textual structures, as well as by an expanding range of phenomena attributed to visual precedence. At the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, the specifics of pragmatic predetermination and use of the analyzed forms of pre-existing visual phenomena in political and media discourses have been highlighted. Furthermore, representative data have been collected on their origins and transfer into advertising discourse, and the first steps have been taken to better understand how these phenomena are used in other types of discourse, such as literary, artistic, popular science, educational, and portrait imagery. Researchers have distinguished between the general and particular (characteristic of specific communication domains) functions of pre-existing visual phenomena, and some progress has also been made in studying certain technologies actualizing their pragmatic functions. Based on their functionalpragmatic well-formedness, pre-existing visual phenomena can be considered as visual stylistic means, indicating the emergence of visual stylistics of the text

This article explores the possibilities of interaction between psycholinguistics, corpus linguistics, and text mining. When it comes to big data processing, the recent advances in psycholinguistics must be taken into account. In our digital reality, we should no longer view text as a mere sum of individual language units that are assembled based on their similarities in meaning. The insights of psycholinguistics into text have been revised, as in-depth text analysis unravels the new roles of the sender and the recipient, bringing to the fore qualitative methods for processing large data arrays. Without studying the mechanisms of speech generation and perception, it is impossible to improve language neural networks and machine translation engines. Here, the potential of psycholinguistics for training specialists in text analytics is discussed. As an example, the advantages of integrating the disciplines “Psycholinguistics” and “Psycholinguistic Methods for Studying Language and Text” into the psychological and linguistic module of the Master’s program “Text Analytics in Education and Science”, which has been launched at Kazan Federal University (Russia), are shown. The psycholinguistic component of the discipline “Corpus Linguistics” for Master’s students is described.

Cross-linguistic patterns of metadiscourse: Disciplinary similarities and section-based differences

This study examines metadiscourse markers across a corpus of Estonian and Lithuanian journal articles in the field of linguistics. We aim to 1) compare the global use of all the metadiscourse markers across the languages and texts, making distinctions between these languages and specific academic journals, and 2) to discern whether similar and/or different patterns can be identified across the languages and whether such patterns also manifest across various academic journals. We find that Estonian writers use self-mentions more frequently in methods sections than Lithuanian counterparts. Comparing journals, the Lithuanian journal Kalbotyra shows more transition markers, code glosses, and endophoric markers, while the Estonian ERÜ aastaraamat relies more on transition markers in results and discussion sections. Despite discipline similarities, variations emerge in specific sections and interpersonal categories across languages and journals. The study provides insights into metadiscourse patterns and their role in different languages and academic contexts, offering potential guidance for future research and practice in non-English academic writing.

Investigating Predicate Types and Mood Selection in Polish Complement Clauses

The subjunctive mood has often been deemed to be limited only to languages that have a distinct subjunctive paradigm Given such assumptions, this mood could not appear in languages like Polish due to its absence of a separate morphological ending for this mood However, the Polish construction involving the complex complementizer “żeby” and the l-participle has comparable semantic and morphosyntactic properties to the Spanish subjunctive mood This construction appears almost exclusively in subordinate clauses, displays a lack of coreference between subjects, and is temporally defective Moreover, it can be found after the same types of predicates that trigger the subjunctive mood in the Romance languages Therefore, this article aims to demonstrate that it is possible to suppose the existence of a subjunctive construction in Polish This goal is achieved based on the data obtained through a corpus study and a subsequent grammaticality judgment test.

Preference of voice and performance style in radio advertising

This study sought to find out which style of radio advertisement performance listeners consider likable, and which acoustic features differentiate the likable from the unlikable. The same spokespersons presented a gender neutral pretend-advertisement in two styles: calm and energetic. Listeners had to rate the likability of the performances. The results showed that listener likability scores were consistent and did not depend on listener gender. The listeners overwhelmingly preferred advertisements presented in a calm style, regardless of the performer or their age or gender. For each advertisement, 88 parameters of the extended Geneva Minimalistic Acoustic Parameter Set (eGeMAPS) were calculated. Most of these significantly differentiated likable and unlikable performances. Likable performances were characterised by lower pitch, faster articulation rate, a quieter voice with no abrupt changes in loudness, and a breathy voice. The study showed the importance of determining which performance style listeners prefer, as the voice of the performer is directly affected by the performance style. Listeners might like a voice in one style, but not the other.

Postrzeganie poprawności wybranych innowacji leksykalnych występujących w języku potocznym przez rodzimych użytkowników języka polskiego

The purpose of the study is an investigation of the perception of the acceptability of se- lected colloquial lexical innovations (the verbs zadziać się (to happen [once]), zadziewać się (to hap- pen [continuously or repeatedly]), ogarnąć (się) and ogarniać (się) (a broad range of meanings, for example, to cope with something, to understand something, etc.) by native speakers of Polish, on the basis of their idiolects. The study combined two methods: an analysis of online and printed sources, looking for examples of the use of these verbs in context, and a survey conducted among Polish speakers of various educational backgrounds and professions. The results show that these verbs are gaining popularity in the media, yet speakers’ attitudes towards them vary considerably. However, these lexical innovations are mostly perceived as acceptable only in colloquial Polish, which reflects the respondents’ language awareness.

Those who, as it happened to the writer of these words, interact with literature, popularize it, teach it, create it to the best of their ability, and in their spare time study it, must ask themselves questions about the status of the text, the reader, the author and the rules or paradoxes of representation. Superimposed on each other, these areas of thought together create a literary space. In this space, a parallel point can be found, allowing the integrity of the subject to be saved. In the past this problem did not exist, because the literary space was uniformly filled with so-called humanism, which in this particular case is the conviction that everything that has come out of the hand of man or has become an object of reflection is in a mutual relationship. It was the vocation of the humanist to follow the course of these relationships and reconstruct their causes, or design their continuation. Today, humanism has left a memento in the form of the socalled humanities, but I will not develop this thread.

Jak (i dlaczego) kłócono się o język badań literackich?

The aim of the article is to discuss and interpret, from the perspective of sociology of knowledge, a few debates on style and terminology of literary studies which took place in the 20th and 21st century in the circles of the literary studies scholars in Warsaw. In the first part of the article, the author discusses the debates concerning the terminology of verse theory in the pre- and post-war periods in the context of its societal reach. Next, he summarizes the discus- sions that took place in the 1950s and 1960s, which criticized the use of scientific language in the humanities . The second part of the article is dedicated to two more recent debates: one centered around the reception of Ilustrowany słownik terminów literackich (Illustrated dictionary of literary terms; here again returns the question of the societal reach of humanities research); and the other one focused on the requirement of schematization of writing in the humanities, related to the influence capitalism on the humanities, and the resultant opportunities and dan- gers. Using the sociology of P. Bourdieu and its newer interpretations (A. Zysiak), as well as S. Ahmed’s approach, the author argues that each standpoint represented in the debates on the language of the humanities (its proper style and preferred terminology) is inevitably political. Starting with this observation, in each case the author points out the political dimension of the argumentation presented by individual scholars: the elitist-conservative one, the liberal iden- tity-based one, and the left egalitarian one.

A Taste of Metaphor Variation: Contrasting the Metaphorical Extensions of “stew” and “guisar”

This article examines the range of metaphors activated by the cooking term stew in English and its Spanish counterpart guisar. The data were drawn from Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and Corpus del Español: Web and Dialects. The metaphors were identified by applying MIP (Pragglejaz Group, 2007) and incorporating semantic frames (Fillmore, 1982) to provide a detailed analysis of the mappings between the core frame elements involved, and the thematic roles performed by those elements. The results suggest that English and Spanish diverge considerably regarding the metaphors evoked by stew and guisar. The lemma stew activated a broader scope of metaphorical extensions than guisar. Just one shared metaphor was identified, which underscores the presence of distinct cognitive preferences within the respective languages.

İ‘TİZÂLÎ DÜŞÜNCENİN ÂYETLERİN DİLSEL YORUMUNA ETKİSİ

Mu‘tazila has an important place in the history of Islamic thought. At the same time, it is a theological school that tries to justify the theological principles related to Islam with rational principles. Encountering people from different religions and cultures after the conquests and the increase in scientific and cultural developments due to these conquests were also an important factor in the emergence of the Mu‘tazila. With the emergence of the Mu‘tazila school in the field of creed, it began to form its own principles of belief. In this context, they adopted the principles of “tawhid, adl, va'd and vaîd, al-manzila bayn al-manzilatayn and al-‘amr bi al-ma‘rûf nahy ‘an al-munkar”, which they refer to as “al-usul al-khamsa”. They tried to express all their thoughts and issues in the field of belief within the framework of these principles. They tried to express all their thoughts and issues in the field of theology within the framework of these principles. In addition, they have made an effort not to put forth an opinion contrary to the texts of the Qur‘an on theological issues. However, they saw that they sometimes contradicted their own principles and the verses of the Qur‘an. Therefore, they tried to benefit from the possibilities of the Arabic language in order to interpret the aforementioned verses in accordance with their own creed. Parallel to this, mu‘tazilite nahw scholars interpreted the apparent meanings of the verses, which they deem contrary to their ı‘tizalî thoughts, in accordance with their own creed by taking advantage of the language’s possibilities. In this study, we tried to deal with the issues of how Mutazilite Nahw scholars used the Arabic language to interpret the verses of the Qur’an according to their own creed principles.

AN OVERVIEW OF SONG DUBBING IN THE ARAB WORLD: A CASE STUDY OF "WE DON’T TALK ABOUT BRUNO" LYRICS FROM ENCANTO

The landscape of audiovisual translation has changed significantly in this era of globalization due to advances in digital technology. The aim of this study is to analyze the translation procedures used in translating a song of Walt Disney’s Animated Musical Movies; namely "We do not talk about Bruno" from the American computer-animated film "Encanto “Family Madrigal" into Arabic language. Methodologically, this study applies a comparative analysis framework developed by Schjoldager et al. (2008) to investigate the procedures used in translating the song into two varieties of Arabic language, i.e. Egyptian Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic. The research seeks to uncover both similarities and differences between the two translated versions through a descriptive qualitative analysis. Initially, the findings for the two versions of the Arabic translation show that of the four procedures analyzed in this study; Direct Translation, Adaptation, Paraphrase, and Deletion, “direct translation” is the most frequently used in both versions, although it was used much more in the Modern Standard Arabic variety than in the Egyptian Arabic variety, showing a predominant adherence to the source text as albeit at the expense of sacrificing certain artistic nuances. While the translation into Egyptian Arabic emphasizes fidelity to the target text, it effectively adapts the essence of the source material. Prominent procedures like direct translation, adaptation, paraphrase, and deletion emerge respectively as prevalent procedures employed in the dubbing process of the song. It sheds light on the predominant procedures employed and the subsequent ramifications stemming from their widespread use, thus offering significant contributions to our understanding of the Audiovisual Translation studies.

Поетика крові та лайна у творчості Олеся Ульяненка

The radical character of Oles Ulianenko’s literary works stems from the fact that the author utilizes some highly controversial motifs, namely blood and excrement, in constructing his poetics. The aim of the article is to defi ne the characteristics and outline of the writer’s artistic world, taking into consideration corporal substances as world-building tools. To achieve the stated goal, both the traditional methods such as cultural-historical and comparative-typological analysis are used, as well as hermeneutics and the rather innovative corporal-mimetic method. The author concludes that Oles Ulianenko incorporates substances like blood and excrement in his artistic imagery because, in his highly skeptical artistic interpretation, the writer can only reach the depthts of inner, corporally determined motives which condition the ontological sense of human being when resorting to such measures.
