The article examines some consequences of the Old-Bulgarian merging of nasal vowels and searches for the reasons leading to a divergence between the expected and the actual results from this process. The following have been examined from a morphological point of view: the homonymous forms of Accus. singularis and pluralis of names of female gender -ja- bases; the conjugation forms of 1 p. sg. Present tense and Nominative, singularis male and neuter gender of the present participle of verbs from the 3rd and 4th Old-Bulgarian conjugations, as well as the homonymy between the oblique cases of the present participle of verbs of the 3rd Old-Bulgarian conjugation.

One for All and All Four One: Yers and Nasals in Rodopi Dialects

The paper observes one of the phonological features – the merger of the four Late Common Slavic (or early Old Bulgarian) vowels, the two yers ъ and ь, and the two nasals о and e, into a single reflex. The purpose of the present paper is to suggest an alternative explanation of the development of the vocalic systems of the Rodopi dialects and, perhaps, other Bulgarian dialects as well. This explanation represents preliminary results of a re-examination of the development of Rodopi vocalization in light of the broad typological studies of the past ten to fifteen years.

he article explores the use and the meaning of the original terms господьствоующаа and покорительнаа used by Constantine Kostenečki in his famous Сказаниѥ изьявленно о писменхь. It seems that these terms could have been created and introduced only in accordance with an open syllabic structure. This structure was dominant in the 14th and 15th centuries, and Constantine Kostenečki abandoned deliberately the Greek terms φωνήεντα (гласнаа) and σύμφονα (съгласна) in order to make an exact Slavic terminology.

Глаголический список римско-византийской литургии Св. Петра

The present article deals with ff. 14r-19r of the 11th ctntury liturgical manuscript Sinai Glagolitic 5/N, discovered in 1975 and described in 1988 in the well known catalogue of J. C. Tarnanidis as the “Sinai Missal”. On the basis of the text of a prayer which the catalogue gives in its entirety, the author of this article identifies it as a prayer of the Byzantine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, one which the manuscript, however, has inserted into a completely Latin euchological context. Furthermore, the author shows that the text is an unedited witness – indeed, the oldest witness hitherto discovered – of the Italo-Byzantine Liturgy of St. Peter. A philological analysis of the text leads to the conclusion that the Slavonic version of the liturgy is based on a Greek model. This, in turn, makes it highly improbable that the Slavonic formulary of the Liturgy of St. Peter could be a compilation attributable to Cyrillo-Methodian circles. From the few rubrics transcribed in Tarnanidis’ description the author concludes that the Greek model behind the Slavonic redaction is related not to the Athonite Greek redaction of the Liturgy of St. Peter, but to 10th century Italo-Greek witnesses from Campania and Calabria.

The attention in this study focuses on Collection No 1176-4° in GIM (State History Museum. Moscow), containing fragments of four manuscripts which have been repeatedly described by Russian palaeographers. A new dating and localization of the fragments is provided. The first fragment of a menaion is, according to the author, a Middle-Bulgarian manuscript from the second half to the 13th с. The second is a Moldavian horologion (with Middle-Bulgarian spelling) of the 15th or early 16th c. The third is an old Russian service menaion of the late 13th or very early 14th c., while the fourth is a service menaion of the first half of the 14th с. The errors in the dating and attributions of these fragments in A. Turilov’s opinion are due to the failure, traditional for Russian palaeographic science, to take into consideration the influence of the Southern Slavonic manuscripts of the 13th and 14th centuries on the formation of the graphics of the Eastern Slavonic scripts of the 15th с.

Lexicological analyses of OCS are mainly based on translated texts and usually try to establisch the meaning of OCS lexemes on the basis of their Greek equivalents. Such an approach suffers from methodological shortcomings. An alternative (especially in the case of original texts) is provided by the contextual approach, determining meaning on the basis of careful analysis of the linguistic context. The usefulness of this approach is demonstrated by the analysis of the lexemes триѩзыьнъ/триѩзыьникъ, кънигъни/бѹкварь, бѹкы/кънигы/писмѧ, грьк-/елин- in texts going back to the Cyrillo-Methodian period (mainly the Vitae of Constantine-Cyril and Methodius and Hrabr’s treatise On the letters).

Thanks to the efforts of researchers from different countries, considerable headway has been made in the last two or three decades in the study of the problem of the spread of the Slavs on the territory of Byzantium and their gradual integration (outside Bulgaria and the Serbian principalities) into the composition of the subjects of the Empire. In this article the author makes an attempt to correct the hypothesis of N. Oikonomidès, supported also by other scholars, about the fate of the Slav population in Bithynia in the 7th с. during the so-called “giant sale of Slav slaves in 694/695”.

The text of Слово о крѣпости иосифовѣ is analysed according to a copy in Cod. Berol. Wuk. 48 of the early 14th century arguing its early South-Slavonic origin. On the basis of lexical, morphological and syntactical peculiarities it is assumed that the translation of the Sermon can by linked to the output the Preslav literary school.

The paper deals with the early Czech chronicles with the purpose to establish the value of the Chronicle of the so-called Dalimil as a Cyrillo-Methodian source. It analyses the segments of Chapter 25 of the Chronicle in contrast with the possible textual prototypes and with the chronicles, which are possibly inspired by and modelled on the Chronicle under consideration. A corresponding methodology of analysis is proposed.

The Enina codex is a lectionary of Acts and Epistles which contains not only the biblical text but also many liturgical texts. Complete troparia are frequently given in it. A comparison between troparia in the Enina codex and some other lectionaries is made. It shows the existence of a main body of troparia which are given in every manuscript. Minimal textological distinctions exist between them in the manuscripts. There are some troparia, however, where the differences are so considerable that it is obvious that in the different manuscripts are included different translations, sometimes made from different Greek originals. It is concluded that the main body of troparia was translated at first, probably by the Saint Brothers Cyril and Methodius, when they translated the lectionary of the Acts and Epistles, and then, through the centuries, other troparia were added to the lectionaries. The beginnings of the troparia, which are compared here, are given in the table.

Two types of instructions for this reading are established, and the emergence and the changes which took place in it from the 13th to the 16th с. are examined.

К вопросу о кирилло-мефодиевской традиции в Венгрии

The opinions expressed so far on the presence of a Cyrillo-Methodian tradition on the territory of present Hungary are examined in the article. The question of the time of the construction of the church of “St. Clement” in the settlement of Balatonlelle, and the problem of determining the time of the emergence of the worship of St. Clement in Pannonia are discussed. The author sets forth some considerations supporting the hypothesis according to which the church in Balatonlelle was built in the 70s of the 9th с. at the time of the missionary work of St. Methodius among the Pannonian Slavs. He adduces historical data which permit the assumption that a Slav population lived around Balatonlelle in the second half of the 9th с.

Stories and Names : Modes of Eastern Orthodox Rhetoric of Sainthood

The present analysis is a study of the hagiographie texts of Slavia Orthodoxa (predominantly originating in the Balkan area) from the viewpoint of their discursive characteristics. Hagiography is understood here in its broadest scope: as a corpus of writings about saints. Besides narrative texts that are traditionally designated as hagiography in the narrow sense of the term, this corpus includes also saint's encomia and various hymnographic texts about saints. This textual material of diverse generic origin is united not only by its common subject-matter but most of all by the invariable concept of sainthood that is communicated through them to the audience of Christian believers.

Преславска лексика в превода на Псевдо-Методиевото Откровение

In the article are discussed the lexical particularities of the Old Bulgarian translation of the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius which connect it with the texts originating from the Preslav literary centre. On the basis of comparative lexicographic study with a high degree of probability is drawn the conclusion that to the typical Preslav lexemes could be added such words as: жѹпьь / жѹпелиь / жѹпельь, брѣждь / брѣжда, отьина, зълокъзньно дѣло and зълокъзньнъ, мѣнити, юнота – παρθήνος, попѹщение – άποστασία, дивыи осьлъ – Ђναγρος.

The present article examines the linguistic structure of the text Латинскиѥ рѣи which is one of the additional texts accompanying Matthew Vlastar’s Syntagma. In a bilingual dictionary an unknown translator gives the Slavonic equivalents of the Latin juridical terms and phraseology. The author’s observations are based on a copy of the 15th century in the library of Rila Monastery. This is an attempt to follow up the process of adoption of the written juridical culture with the help of concrete lexical material.

After systematizing the natural-history concepts presented in Exarch’s Hexameron, we find that the facts about the plants and the animals are translated mainly from the analogous work of Basil the Great; the facts about the rivers and some meteorological phenomena – from the Hexameron of Severianus of Gaval; and those about the heavenly bodies and man – from Aristotle. It is interesting to note the almost complete textual coincidence of some passages from Exarch’s Hexameron and the Dialogues of Pseudo-Kesarius, the poetic description of the calm sea, the presentation and the refutation of some astrological notions, the argumentation about the Earth-water basin, etc.

The Vita of Cyril and Methodius was published in a learned journal for the first time 170 years ago but it still posses many questions for the scholars. This paper considers some of the controversial places in the text. An attempt is made to see this Vita in the light of early Old-Bulgarian Literature of the 9th and 10th c. A possible literary pattern is distinguished, and other texts of the same period are shown to have connections with the Vita of Cyril and Methodius in their conception, form and dissemanation.

История на уводната част на Метафрастовото житие за св. Николай Мирликийски

Probably the translation of the Life of the Saint appeared in Bulgaria in the 14th century. The anonymous translator adhered strictly to the principle of literal translation, i. e. word for word. The article considers the rich structures of the preface (προοίμιον) and its authorized adaptation in Russia in the 17th century. The version in modern Greek of Damascene Studites (16th c.) preserved the contents of the preface. The version of Damascene Studites was translated into literary Bulgarian by Grigori Prilepski and Samuel Bakachich who followed the principles of logical translation. As regards the versions in modern Bulgarian, some translators used a new preface while others missed the introductory part.

The article explores the use and the phonetical value of the Cyrillic character Ѫ used by Ivan Kravonosy in his notes in the Codex Assemanianus. This character whose pattern is the sign for back nasal vowel ѫ, appears instead of ь, ъ and e and has phonetical value of a back unhigh vowel Λ (а). This vowel can be a result of the development of both nasals and jers. The forms крестѪ < кр'ΛстΛт < крьстъ; честѪнь < чʼΛстΛн < чʼΛстʼΛн чьстьнъ are very significative for the later development of the Λ < ь, крестѪ is probably the earliest article without final -т.
