The floods in May and August 2014 caused several losses of life and ways immeasurable damage. From the viewpoint of archival profession, the damage is irreparable and incalculable. Laws and bylaws who regulating archival activity in the Republic of Srpska no provisions relating to the protection of archival and documentary materials in a state of natural disaster. It pointed to a lack of skilled workers and equipment for rescue archival and documentary materials.

Practical Methods in Digital Archiving of Rare Books

The book Practical Methods in Digital Archiving of Rare Books – Examples from the HUMI Project was first published by Keio University in Japan (Keio Gijuku Daigaku) in 2010 and received a second edition a year later. The author, Masaaki Kashimura1, involved in the HUMI project, explores the subject of the creation of digital archives of rare world heritage books and the further managing of the images obtained.

Antiseptics are chemical compounds or mixtures of chemical substances that are used for protecting cultivated plants, which also may be used as a new generation biocides in the protection against microorganisms and preservation of library books. The basic component determining the specificity of a plant protection product used for book conservation is the substance biologically active in relation to certain organisms, i.e. which causes the disorder of the physiological processes by blocking the activity of the respective enzymes.The aim of the study was to investigate a group of fungicides, not yet in full use in agricultural practice, in terms of their usefulness in protecting old books. For the investigation triazole derivatives were chosen (as a group of asymmetric fungicides), whose mechanism of biological activity is the inhibition of ergosterol, the substance building blocks of the cell membrane. Before the actual investigation, the biological activity of the fungicides was referred in old books preservation process, involving the appointment of the so-called. ED50 coefficients, i.e. what amount of the substance is needed to destroy half of the pathogen population. The ED50 is used to determine the concentration of working fluid which should be sprayed on the surfaces of the protected material: paper, parchment, leather or fabric, providing the required protective efficacy.

Recommendations are presented for the preservation and storage of documents written on parchment. The reasons for breaking the parchment manuscripts have been analyzed. Different lesions of permanent documents were examined in preventive conservation and restoration. It has been pointed out that historically valuable parchment manuscripts are very sensitive to heat and relative humidity. It is necessary for different terms in relation to the preservation of these special documents.

Wizualizacja wyników oceny stanu zachowania księgozbiorów za pomocą mapy

Mapping is one of the basic processes of the visualisation of collections of data. The purpose of the present article is to present a strategy of the development of a map in order to visualise the results of the evaluation of the state of preservation of the collections of codices. This instrument may be used when conditions such as the evaluation of an entire collection of books, the spatial community of a collections, or the representation of the sequence of the arrangement of volumes on shelves on maps are fulfilled. One suggests two versions of a map of the evaluation of the state of preservation: a map which uses a decimal structure and a map which is an accurate delineation of the arrangement of bookshelves in a storage room. An example of the application of the second form of a map is a table which presents the map of the results of the evaluation of the state of preservation of a part of the collection of books of the Camaldolese of Bieniszew, which is currently stored in the Jagiellonian Library in Kraków. The interpretation of the map will enable the identification of the places of potential microbiological threat and to indicate of “special treatment” volumes, which require the ensuring of security, isolation and the appointment for relevant conservation.

Restituiri. Două piese sculpturale, recent redate patrimoniului cultural național

In the last 20 years, the phenomenon of poaching the archaeological sites has been developed in Romania, in order to obtain artefacts, which can be later capitalized through the illegal trade on the black market of antiques. Many decontextualized archaeological pieces – some of them of inestimable value – belong to unauthorized collections, some which have been the subject of judicial investigations for the purpose of recovery of the artefacts but also of the information surrounding their discovery. The present study approaches the issue about two sculptural pieces, “discovered” in a so called “private collection” of a citizen from Alba Iulia. The data obtained through the judicial investigations, corroborated with the typological-stylistic and functional analyses, concludes for the origin of artefacts in the area of Bucerdea Grânoasă village (Alba County) and in the roman antique city of Apulum.

Un lăsământ baronial din vremea Iluminismului transilvan: Biblioteca Brukenthal (1777; 1790; 1817–2017)

The founding of the Brukenthal Library was made possible due to the book collection purchased by Samuel Baron von Brukenthal (15.972 volumes), enlarged over the years through the means of other collections, among which the Chapel Library, founded as early as the 14 century, encompassing the Dominican Monastery Library, the collections or libraries which had belonged to the rich Patriciate families of Sibiu, as well as the book collections of Academy of Law. To all these, the Brukenthal Library was enriched thanks to private donations, either from Transylvania or from abroad.

Stosunek do książki dawnej na przykładzie egzemplarzy z księgozbioru Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego w Warszawie

The purpose of this publication is to present ways of book circulation as well approach of its owners and users to the methods of handling with old prints. It features effects of historical events (like World War II) on books storage, use and condition. First, methods of old prints acquisition are analyzed, based on special collection of UKSW Main Library. The techniques of book preservation and theft protection (with the use of specific binding) are also presented. Presenting example one of the Franciscan monastery, preservation and maintenance of old prints collection in religious orders is being analyzed. The paper gives overview on list of Polish libraries damaged during World War II. Methods of replevin and acquiring of old prints in the post-war period are finally presented.

Biblioteka batignolska i woluminy z jej zasobów w Bibliotece Głównej Uniwersytetu Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego w Warszawie

The beginnings of the library of the National Polish School at Batignolles date back to the first half of the 19th century. Later this precious library collection, as a deposit, went to the Kórnik Library. After Poland regained independence, it was divided between the University Library in Vilnius and the National Library of Poland. The Warsaw collection was destroyed by Germans after the Warsaw Uprising. After years individual volumes from Batignolles Library can be found in the Main Library of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.

System monitorowania podstawowych warunków środowiska w Bibliotece Państwowej oraz w Bibliotece Uniwersytetu Ottona i Fryderyka w Bambergu

The storage of collections is an issue related to the technical process of materials aging. Ensuring the proper conditions for the storage of valuable collections has been solved for many years. At present, there are standards regulating the conditions in which books should be stored, eg. ISO standard. However, maintaining optimal conditions is a difficult task. The MonTreAL system is helpful in this matter. This system helps to monitor the temperature and humidity in the storerooms. It can also generate alarms when the conditions are not appropriate. The article presents the Bamberg State Library and the University of Bamberg Library, for which the MonTreAL system was developed. It also presents the perspective of independent construction and use of the system, which can help to save valuable collections for a longer time.

Evaluation and Protection of Library Collections with Heritage Value

In this article, the authors present, on the basis of the scientific arguments obtained through laboratory experiments, some pertinent aspects regarding: the evaluation and preservation of the digitized collections; presentation of conditions for the digitization of valuable library documents; presentation of ante- and post-digitization measures for library collections that are subject to digitization. This scientific approach is designed to preserve digitized libraries, collections and documents, being an essential scientific activity that takes place in parallel with the conservation of information from digitized products.

Purpose of Artcle. The purpose of the work is to highlight the conceptual model of the documentation support for library management, which will facilitate the effective work of the library institution in the conditions of its internal and external communication environments. Methodology. The methodology of the research was based on socio-communicative, system-activity, informational approaches. The author uses the modeling method, which makes possible scientific comprehension and substantiation of the essence, tasks, main components of the system of the documentary management of the library and to analyze the directions for their further development. Scientific Novelty. The scientific novelty of the research is to determine the modern structure of the conceptual model of the documentation support for library management as the holistic documentary information system, taking into account the specifics of the library's activity and the need to ensure the interaction of its departments.

Romanian Scientific Contributions in the Field of Conservation and Restoration of LAM’s Paper Documents

The sun formed ornament motif on the manuscripts is called “Şemse”. “Şemse” in manuscript bindings differs according to application techniques and motif types and is called with different names. “Cold Şemse” technique investigated in this study has been applied intensively until 15th century in Turkish Binding Art “by pressing the prepared şemse mold directly onto the skin without using gilding”. This study was conducted in Vahit Paşa Manuscript Library, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Republic of Turkey. Within the scope of research, the manuscripts, which have a very important value in terms of Turkish Binding Art nd Turkish Decorative Art, and which have the characteristics of a national heritage with a history dating back to centuries, have been studied. During the research process, the manuscripts ornamented with the “Cold Şemse” technique were examined in detail in terms of qualitative features such as materials used in the construction and decoration of the binders, applied Şemse techniques, motifs and composition characteristics in technique and applied ornamental techniques. A total of 8 manuscripts were tried to be introduced and documented with photographs. Information about the qualitative features of these manuscripts such as the period they belong to and their names were arranged and explained based on archives of Manuscript Institution of Turkey, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Republic of Turkey. Although there is no precise date information about when leather binding covers are made and binding date, the dating information mentioned within the scope of the study refers only to the periods in which the manuscripts belong to.

Restaurarea icoanelor pe sticlă „Maica Domnului îndurerată” din colecţia Complexului Naţional Muzeal „Astra”

The glass icon “The Blessed Virgin of Sorrows” with inventory number 1246OC is not dated or signed. After detailed analysis we assigned it to the icon painter Pavel Zamfir from Laz. The icon is from Câlnic village, Alba County. This glass icon is part of a series of five icons that are held by “Astra” National Museum, and all have undergone special restoration.

Cercetarea ştiinţifică a ţesăturilor, parte integrantă a restaurării pieselor de patrimoniu

The paper work includes:  An historical – documentary presentation of the festive Saxon costume;  The context in which the polychrome handkerchief caught in the girdle, from the peasant costume was replaced with an industrial textile;  The technical study of the piece in the museum (the fabrication technology, the structure of the weaving, the nature and morphology of the fibers, the fringes technology).
