Sándor Makkai’s literary life work can hardly be understood without the strong connections to his profession as a Calvinist/Reformed priest, as both occupations significantly determined his mindset as a thinker, as well as his intellectual image: the aesthetic experience triggered by the divine service, the communicability of the experience of God are essential elements of his ideas on theology, faith, and the church. In an art sociological approach, one has to deal with a complex phenomenon, since the issue of how and on the basis of what premises Makkai’s position as a priest and temporarily a bishop can be connected to his author role acceptance is yet to be investigated.

Although the Erdélyi Iskola did not intend to be the journal of pedagogues teaching only in confessional schools, it primarily propagated confessional (school) education. Áron Márton argued in favour of confessional education in several of his writings. Besides other roles, he expected confessional schools to elaborate the “methodology” of education for a minority life form. The editors and journalists of the fi rst period – between 1933 and 1940 – of the Erdélyi Iskola consciously undertook the propagation of education for a minority life form. Their activity, presented in this paper, proves that they also accomplished what they claimed by their work in school and in popular education.

The paper investigates the characteristics of the transitional period in Romania, and the ongoing social, political, economic, and cultural processes following the 1989 regime change. The fall of the old regime triggered new challenges in all fields of life in Romania: the forces of power possession and division, that is, the actors of the political stage, have changed, as also the social situation, place, and role of various social groups. Who were the winners and the losers of this slow transition? In addition to answering these questions, the author also tries to outline the general situation of the press in the age, the particularities of the “intermittently free” media, while also endeavoring to draw pertinent conclusions for the present.

Scholarship on gendered news in campaign coverage of women running for office points to what Jamieson (1995) refers to as the double bind for women in leadership. This study analyzed 67 news reports from three major newspapers published shortly after John McCain announced Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate for the 2008 election. Findings indicate news coverage of Palin did place her in a double bind by focusing predominantly on her family and questioning her competence for political office. We argue that this focus creates barriers for women who run for political office.
