This paper deals with the reception of the novels and short stories by the great Check writer Bohumil Hrabal in Macedonian culture. His poetic and style are very specific, so that the translation of his works is very serious and complicated issue. One of the best translators of his prose in Macedonian is Donka Rous. Still, there is a possibility for further discussion on some particular translational solutions. In this paper the focus is put on the translation of the term “pabitel” which is one of specific Hrabalian expressions.

Based on several translation-oriented disciplines and fields using translation, some of which constantly use new technologies, the teaching of translation in Applied Modern Languages departments involves multilingual computer processing, a field that largely overlaps with that of the language industries. The multidisciplinary training for the translation professions (also considered professions of linguistic and cultural mediation) requires a perfect synergy between the disciplines of intercultural communication and appropriate interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches. Business simulation is one of these methods. It is perfectly suited because, on the one hand, it can be adapted to be used to train specialists in many trades the focal point of which is translating and, on the other hand, it can help a future professional to get used in advance with his/her working environment and learn to live his job. This is what the author tries to illustrate through translation teaching approaches involving the simulation of translation projects in the field of the language industries.

Starting from her own experience of teacher of translation, the author shows the role that contrastive linguistics can – and should – have in teaching reasoned translation to apprentice translators. As an illustration, the author presents several fragments of a translation-oriented grammar (French-Romanian and Romanian-French) focused on several specific linguistic structures which are the object of a (translational) systematic contrastive analysis. The author then emphasizes the process of explicitation (addition, amplification), illustrated by the use of some categories of explicitational terms.

This study analyzes the changes undergone by the “grammar-translationˮ type French-Italian bilingual textbooks, used especially in the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages in Europe in the eighteenth century, following the institutionalization of MFL teaching in the nineteenth century. The treatment of common conversation idiomatic expressions is here examined in four avatars of Giovanni Veneroni’s 1678 textbook (published in 1737, 1786, 1821 and 1864). It shows that it is not the grammar-translation method of these textbooks that should have been challenged in the late nineteenth century, but a shift in the conception of language from living orality to old-fashioned writing. The identification of historical, social, linguistic and political causes that motivated this educational involution allows us today to re-assess the key role of translation in the teaching of MFL and at last gives these old bilingual textbooks the place they deserve, especially in the eighteenth century, in the history of Franco-Italian translation.

This paper can be considered an inter, trans- and multi- disciplinary study. The author combines several disciplines (the pedagogy, criticism and history of translation) which, while retaining their specificity, are involved in the acquisition of transversal skills that are common to the practice and history of translation, to translation theories and terminology. The author's intention is to demonstrate that the translation competence, built on an undeniable editorial skill, can increase simultaneously with the documentary and terminological competence and that translation teaching and learning goes hand in hand with the teaching of the translation history and translation studies.

The teaching of translation involves several disciplines – translation into L1 and L2, history and deontology, etc. – each of them with its own specific objectives and methods. This study sets out to explore various ways in which translation for children can be used at the beginning of the university professional training of future translators. The author's starting point is the observation of the fact that this type of translation can illustrate “in miniature” most of the difficulties (terminological, cultural, linguistic and other) occurring in professional practice and the various kinds of possible solutions.

The purpose of this article is to present the methodological status of the dictionary in the process of learning/teaching other Slavic languages and to determine the features of the bilingual thematic educational Ukrainian-Croatian dictionary. Dictionaries play an important role in the development of national culture and in the supporting and improving a particular native language. During the thirty-year period of independence both Croatia and Ukraine can boast only a small amount of Croatian and Ukrainian lexicographic editions that could simultaneously apply to Croatian and Ukrainian. The important role of vocabulary in learning a foreign language does not require any comments. In fact it is generally accepted in teaching methods, which means that dictionary, as well as textbook, are necessary means in the teaching process. Noting and grouping words in dictionary also has a fairly long history. The alphabetical order of lexical units is traditional and commonly accepted in the world lexicography. Hence, thematic and ideographic lexicography are supposed to be alternatives to alphabetic lexicography.

The subject of the paper is the semantic and syntactic description of the peripheral verbs of sensory perception in the Croatian language. Peripherality refers to the occurrence of these verbs with different semantic features, which makes some of them function as hyperonyms of the verbs of sensory perception, some may refer to all types of perception, but also create connections with other semantic fields. The analysis is based on componential analysis and cognitive linguistics, and the predicate-argument structure of those verbs is also presented. The aim of the paper is to show that these verbs have a wider range of meanings and thus greater possibilities in usage than dictionaries suggest within lexicographic description.

The Croatian protiv preposition is a rare preposition with a complementary genitive case government. Although lexicographical sources note the spatial and non-spatial meanings of this preposition, empirical studies only confirm the meanings from the abstract domain of adversativeness, i.e. expressing the opposite position, contradiction, disagreement with something, limiting, counteracting or protecting against something. The task that we set for ourselves in this work is to determine the resource of the Polish translation equivalents of the Croatian protiv preposition. The analysis will be carried out on a parallel corpus excerpted from contemporary Croatian literature written in 20th and 21st centuries and respective Polish translations. The work will use the method of translation equivalence, belonging to comparative linguistics methodology.The study will consist of two parts. The first part will determine the meanings of the protiv preposition present in the built corpus and the right and left side environment of this preposition will be examined. The second part will be dedicated to equivalence. A resource of Polish equivalents will be presented and their lexical, grammatical and semantic features will be determined. Similarities and differences in the expression of similar content in both languages will be indicated and an attempt will be made to determine the translator’s selection of factors for individual equivalents, e.g. in the form of limitations in the right and left side environment, shade of meaning or stylistic value. The statistical analysis will be an important element of the study, which in addition to the semantic characteristics will help determine the main Polish equivalent of the Croatian protiv preposition. The conducted study can be used in the lexicographic practice, didactics and translation.

Our article aims at presenting a few reflections on translating religious texts, more precisely texts of orthodox spirituality, giving some concrete examples of translation and retranslation, from French into Romanian, of a book written by Father Placide Deseille. Despite the secularization of contemporary society, religious translations are constantly increasing, which may contribute to a better understanding of the divine message and to a reconfiguration of the relationship between man and God.

As part of a more extensive research on the cultural aspects of the translation of folktales, our paper tackles the issue of folktales characters’ names from the perspective of their status as culturemes and translation units. We identify here a series of cultural and linguistic features. Their role is to highlight the full meaning of these names and thus provide a relevant tool both for the translator and the researcher undertaking descriptive translation studies. Our suggested analysis model is completed by examples of translation from Romanian into French.

The present paper dwells on two instances of the Bulgarian theatrical adaptation of Dziady in 1937/1938 and two later contemporary performances in 2009 and 2014. These stage adaptations demonstrate the ongoing Bulgarian interest in both the translatability of the text and its stage life as a work that has a persisting vitality in the context of Bulgarian reception. More immediately, the study focuses on the connectedness of the first and only comprehensive translation of Dziady (by Slava Shtiplieva, whose translated version becomes subject to further modifications and assessments by the philologist Lyubomir Andreychin and the poet Nikolay Liliev when intended for stage dramatization) and the visiting theatrical performance set on the stage of the Bulgarian National Theatre by Leon Schiller и Andrzej Pronaszko, with Bulgarian actors, in 1937. The performance represents a significant achievement in the Bulgarian reception trigger ing far-reaching media responses and gathering a large number of prominent Bulgar ian authors and intellectuals. The event sparked heated debates. Slava Shtiplieva’s translation itself, published in 1938 as a separate book, has been subject to numerous critical assessments. The second point of concern here is the writer and translator Blaga Dimitrova’s translation of Conrad’s famous monologue known as “Wielka improwizacja” (“The Great Improvisation”), which is considered more accomplished in terms of poetic achievement and which provides the basis of two subsequent theatrical interpreta tions directed by Nikolay Georgiev, the founder of Alma Mater Sofia University Theatre and the disciple of Kazimierz Dejmek and Jerzy Grotowski. In 1968 (when Dejmek’s adaptation of Dziady was officially banned in Poland) Georgiev was like wise compelled to suspend his lecturing activities and had to leave for the country side. In 2009 and 2014 he set two theatrical performances based on Dziady. The included interview with the stage director offers further insight into the Bulgarian reception of the play and its forms of continuous reassessment.

The German and Bulgarian versions of the poetry collection “Assisi Sonnets” by the political émigré Hristo Ognyanov appeared in a rarely encountered disposition – the translation (1986) came out before the original (1992) in reaching their respective readers. The essay strives to elucidate a number of questions that arise from such a discrepancy but its primary goal is to reconstruct the complex range of cultural relations in the dialogic network of the Assisi sonnets. The juxtaposition between the canonical hagiography of St. Francis of Assisi, the poetic texts and their renditions in translation throws into relief the presence of Bulgarian Orthodox Christian iconography but at the same time reveals the attempts of the German translation to “discipline“ the sonnet visions, to bring them closer to what is considered acceptable for the Catholic audience of readers.

Paremias are phraseological units (PUs) that constitute speech acts in their own right. With the help of examples taken from contemporary Spanish novels translated into Bulgarian, we demonstrate that, just like other phraseological units, paremias have variations and different connotations that sometimes require the translator to consider different possibilities in order for the paremia to fit in the context.

Thе paper investigates the terms in Regulation (EU) 2017/746 in three language versions: Bulgarian, Polish, and English, as a representative case of the Public health terminology in European Union law. The source and the outer form of the terms are being compared. All Slavic terms in the Regulation are calques, whereby phraseological calques and loan blends are most frequent. The main difference between the grammatical structures of the terms in the compared languages is due to conversion as a typical morphological operation in English. The dominant structural type in all three languages is multi-component terms, with the prevalence of two-component terms.
