The present paper focuses on some aspects of poetic translation. It is part of a corpus-based study led in the context of Berber oral poetry, the poetic texts accompanying the celebration of Sebeiba. It shares the experience of translating oral texts from Tamahaq to Arabic and their retranslation into French. It also raises questions regarding the difficulties and constraints of poetic translation and the variability of translation based on differences in view points and domains.

Das Problem des Adressaten: Von Luther bis heute

Kent Nagano, general director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, emphasized on 13 July 2013 in an interview at the radio station Bayern Klassik the appropriateness, indeed the necessity of rerecording musical works of the past. He attributed this to the change of time, each epoch bringing forth ‘new’ addressees who confront music with constantly changing habits and expectations. Thereby Nagano considers the addressee as diachronically changeable, not synchronously variable, i.e. he makes no explicit distinction between music for children, music for amateurs, music for professionals, and in doing so he refers to a generic addressee who expects and requires a different implementation of music over time. From here, the question arises to what extent the parameter ‘addressee’ may be of importance in the case of speech and implicitly of translation, that is, as we know, speaking with a given content? Can parallels between music and language (translation) be determined with reference to the addressee? Can an original text inspire different translations, depending on the target group and generation? What is the attitude of translators and translation scholars towards the question of the addressee when translating?

L’auteur, le traducteur et l’éditeur à la rencontre du lecteur. Le Pays du fromage de Felicia Mihali

Le Pays du fromage [English title, The cheese country](2002) is the first novel published in Quebec by the Romanian Canadian writer Felicia Mihali. It is a translation by the author of her previous novel, Ţara brânzei, that appeared in Romania in 1999. Insofar as it seeks integration into an adoptive culture, it marks a new beginning, the text acquiring meaning in the encounter with the Other, whose centrality to the adoptive culture prompts questions regarding identity and transculturation. In this paper, we aim at observing the decisions an author translating his/her own work is likely to make when faced with the dilemma of whether to preserve the form of the source text very strictly or “naturalize” and “adapt” it to meet the expectations of the target audience. As well as the author-translator, a crucial part in this process, we argue, is that played by the editor,whose influence on the final version translation prepares it for the “encounter” with the target reader.

Is Film Terminology Subtitling a Difficult Task for the Subtitler?

Starting from the premise that ambiguity has to be avoided in scientific communication, the present paper focuses upon the difficulties encountered by a subtitler when translating the terminology of a certain film script from a source language (English) into a target language (Romanian). Consequently we have taken as examples two sequences from the documentary Home directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, where there are brought into discussion terms from the ecology domain and glaciology sub-domain, each of them designating one precise concept. The paper explains the reason why the subtitler’s work requires much effort when looking for the correct Romanian equivalent. Any professional translator must consider that synonymy is not agreed in terminology since it obstructs the accurate communication in a specialized domain.

Uma língua, várias culturas: algumas reflexões sobre os aspetos sociolinguísticos na localização em português brasileiro e em português europeu

This article deals with the importance of the cultural aspects of localization in Brazilian and European Portuguese, the main focus being the address forms. The comparative analysis of localized versions of Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail and Skype show that linguistic and etiquette norms of address are maintained in adapting these products to the Brazilian and Portuguese markets. In the Brazilian version, the pronoun você is used, as a strategy of non-formal address to the users, while in the European Portuguese version, the most common form of address in use is the 3rd person singular of the verbs, which indicates a more formal style of communication between the product and the user. Only Yahoo! Mail uses the pronoun tu and the 2nd person, no doubt as it targets a younger, less formal audience. This short analysis tries to show that culture plays an important role in the localization process with pluricentric languages such as Portuguese. It is our contention that, when language is a means of expressing different cultures, when people may speak the same language but not in the same way, the translator should always keep in mind the public’s expectations about communication.

PSI: a Herculean Task?

How demanding is Public Service Interpreting? Based onour personal experience as public service interpreters for a Romanian foundation and a set of 13 online interviews with fellow Romanian PS interpreters, we seek to provide an answer to the question above. The article sets out to give an overview of the extra-challenges that the PS interpreter faces (linguistic, cultural, psychological or ethical) on the Romanian market, which is not currently regulated, often this job being performed by interpreters lacking formal training. The PS interpreter can simultaneously be the voice of the doctor, refugee, tourist, and lawyer, thus conveying their values, beliefs, and traditions. Such a wide spectrum of clients calls for a particularly skilled and resourceful interpreter. Given its controversial position in the conversation, and the complexity of this job from the point of view of the aspects regarding neutrality, mediation or advocacy involved, his/her task does not come without a price, and it has an important effect on the interpreter, at both professional and personal level.

The paper focuses on the essay Trajan’s Column narrated, which is part of the latest collection published by Italo Calvino himself. It is therefore a work of maturity. The purpose of our analysis is twofold: firstly, we want to make known Calvino’s reading of the Trajan’s Column – this “epic carved in the stone, one of the most extensive and perfect figurative narrations that are known to us” –, a writing little known to the wide audience. Secondly, we wish to emphasize the literary merits of this short, yet very dense essay, highly representative for the Italian writer’s way of making literature, and already encompassing his recommendations for the next millennium literature: lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, multiplicity.

A szakfordítás módszertani kérdései a horvát–magyar nyelvi és kulturális kontextusban

This paper introduces methods used in the Technical Translation Course at the Department of Hungarian Language and Literature in Osijek, including the principles used in text selection and methods that can be applied not only for managing code-mixing and language interference, which make specialised translation more difficult, but also turning them to our students’ advantage. The paper discusses possibilities of using these methods, which often depend on the teacher’s level of preparedness and the students’ competence in translating. Education of bilingual students whose mother tongue is a local variation of Hungarian language is a special kind of challenge. The paper primarily focuses on difficulties caused by bilingualism and language interference, which make the translation process more demanding, and ways of overcoming these issues with the help of teaching methods used in translation classes.

The extended meanings of medical terms. Difficulties in the practice of translation

Taking into account that the structure of a specialized field is never homogeneous, in order to interpret or translate a term, we should define and know its different possible “semantic manifestations” (Martin, 1972: 125). In order to facilitate understanding and to ensure translation accuracy, we analyze - from the perspective of an internal polysemy - the terms of the medical lexicon which constitute a specific and restrictive use of the common language lexicon. Through the study of a selection of terms extracted from a specialized dictionary (Dicţionar Medical, Rusu V. 2010), this communication illustrates the restrictions and the extensions of meaning in a double translation: the terms taken from the common language with a restrictive meaning in the specialized field; the terms belonging to related disciplines and various fields adopting a specific meaning in the medical area. All these directions of change of meaning are thus envisaged to facilitate the practice of translation which raises both general and specific difficulties.

Thereby Hangs a Bawdy Tale: Three Shakespearean Ribald Puns on ‘Tale/Tail’ and Their Romanian Translations

The homophony between the words ‘tale’ and ‘tail’ has served as an ever-bountiful source of punning material for many a century, with some writers as spatially and temporally diverse as Geoffrey Chaucer and Margaret Atwood exploiting their sexually charged punning potential, while others, the likes of Lewis Carroll, harnessing the latent jocular and visual qualities of this particular homophonic pair. It was in William Shakespeare’s works, however, that this punning pair has found the representational plenitude of its vast array of connotations. In Othello, for example, it is a source of toilet humour, in As You Like It, the wordplay on ‘tail/tale’ is part of an extended metaphor of a sexually transmitted disease, while in other plays, such as The Tempest, its punningness is stretched to include words like ‘tailor,’ which, in turn, are imbued with ribald connotations. By comparing three such bawdy instances of wordplay on ‘tail’ and ‘tale’ with three Romanian renderings, this article aims to assess the level of translatability of this ribald punning doublet.

Comment comprendre la fidélité en traduction médicale?

The Translation of Instruction Manuals as Sociocultural Change

The main idea of this article is that, like literary translation, specialized translation disseminates and promotes notions and ideas that influence and ultimately change the configuration of the target culture. The article explains how this happens: through denotations, but especially through connotations, peripheral ideas and feelings that a person, a group of persons, or a culture associates with certain words and modes of discourse. The article tries to capture how these connotations are transmitted through translation and how they affect the target culture in two particular instances connected to the translation of English instruction manuals into Romanian, namely noun clusters and disclaimers.

A tradução dos pronomes de tratamento do português europeu em romeno: o caso de ”você”

The aim of this paper is to presente the hybrid nature of the address pronoun ”você” in European Portuguese, the challenges of grasping all its discoursive values and then translating them into Romanian. For this analysis we used a corpus of four novels written by José Saramago and their translations into Romanian. Although ”você” is formally a pronoun with intermediate value of politeness, its semantic and pragmatic values are more complex, ranging from the low degree of politeness of a typical T pronoun, to the high level of deference of a ”V” pronoun, according to diachronic, diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic factors. The multiple translations of ”você” proposed in this corpus account for the hibridity and the complexity of this pronoun and show how a good translation is able to render in the target language all the visible and the invisible, but not less important meanings of the source term.
