"Я связана с ней против ее желания": О расшифровке Ц. М. Пошеманской стенографического дневника А. Г. Достоевской

Author(s): Irina Svyatoslavovna Andrianova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2018

In 2018 the Decree of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation abolished the profession of a stenographer due to the absence of demand. Researchers of the creative work of Fyodor Dostoevsky cherish the memory of two female stenographers — the writer’s collaborator Anna Dostoevskaya and Ceciliya Poshemanskaya, a modest stenographer from Leningrad that managed to fi nd the key to the shorthand system of the former. In the 1950s-1970s Poshemanskaya disclosed to the public the diary of Anna Dostoevskaya of 1867, the rough copies of “A Writer’s Diary” and “The Brothers Karamazov” and some more pages written shorthand by the writer’s assistant. Th e information on Poshemanskaya and her long-term, broad scale work in the memory of Dostoevsky is scarce. This article gives a brief description of the main stages of her creative career of the stenographer from Leningrad. Some additional details on life and work of Poshemanskaya are available in the documents kept in the fund of historianregistrar Sarra V. Zhitomirskaya (10239-fund). Principally, in the letters of Poshemanskaya to Vera M. Fyodorova and Sarra V. Zhitomirskaya, employees of the Manuscript Department of the V. I. Lenin State Library. The fragments of Poshemanskaya’s letters and her two letters to Vera M. Fyodorova published in the article’s supplement throw light upon the methods of the stenographer’s work and assign the objective to use her experience while decoding shorthand notes from the Dostoevsky archive as well as other historic stenographs.

A Method for Modeling a Schema for Graph Databases

Author(s): Peretz Shoval / Language(s): English Issue: VIII/2018

The recent decade had brought about massive growth in the Web and Web data - pictures, documents, videos and more. What worked well for years with relational databases is not well suited for the unstructured massive amounts of data and applications that are part of the Web, such as social networks. As a result, new types of database have emerged, including NoSQL (“not only SQL”) databases. Graph data-bases are one type of NoSQL database.

A Practical Approach to Ascertaining the Accuracy and Resolution of Post Rendered 3D Models Acquired Originally via 3D Digitization

A Practical Approach to Ascertaining the Accuracy and Resolution of Post Rendered 3D Models Acquired Originally via 3D Digitization

Author(s): Feng Zhao,Soo Choon Loy / Language(s): English Issue: VII/2017

3D digitization is becoming the norm in the preservation of tangible cultural properties be it movable or immovable. In the case of mobile cultural objects, 3D models are normally acquired through non-destructive methods such as photogrammetry or 3D scanning using structured light or laser. The continuing improvements in scanning equipment which result in higher accuracy and resolution can be translated to mean higher level of 3D data acquired. At times, the quantity of 3D data of a single model can get too large and beyond what a normal work-station can process. This is where optimization comes in. However, the level of optimization will vary to suit the final purpose or usage of the 3D model. During optimization, the resulting optimized 3D model is bound to suffer from some level of data loss when compared to the original 3D model acquired directly from laser scanning. This paper discusses a practical method devised by Amber Digital Solutions in maintaining a high level of accuracy of the final optimized model for national archival purposes which requires the highest form of quality.

Academia vs Forums: Official and Unofficial Knowledge

Academia vs Forums: Official and Unofficial Knowledge – The “Case” of Cyril and Methodius

Author(s): Mišel Pavlovski,Loreta Georgievska-Jakovleva / Language(s): English Issue: 10/2016

The digital (virtual) space is the place (some would go as far as to call it the most democratic of all spaces) where ideas and opinions clash, where new meanings are being created, where new values and beliefs are being forged. At the same time, digital space is the site where meaning is shaped and defined. This paper aims at exploring possible changes in meaning when examining Cyril and Methodius via digital space. Hence, said transformations practically help forge new meanings about the past. By situating Cyril and Methodius within the context of the virtual media space, this paper aims at examining how a culture’s heritage and its representation within digital time stand in direct correlation with the needs of contemporary politics and dominant discourses. Thus, the representations of Cyril and Methodius forged within the digital space breathe new meanings into old legacies, i.e., they de/construct and re/construct it. The research shows that said process, though mostly chaotic and partial, is always compatible with powerful (even if oftentimes contradictory) discourses. Along those lines, if juxtaposing the meaning of a culture’s heritage with said culture’s contemporality, we can in fact ascertain its function, meaning, and influence on contemporary cultural processes. Or, to paraphrase Simon During, to examine the ways in which past traces and representations enter contemporary (popular) culture.

In the first two parts of the article, the author investigates the issues of the founding of the musical chapel and its place of activity. In the third part, there is a list of musicians who were members of this chapel over the years. In addition to the names and surnames, their positions, years of employment, musical instruments which they played and details of their biography are indicated. In the next part, both the church and the secular musical repertoire of the musical chapel are described. In this section, also information from the Warsaw periodicals are used. In the seventh part, the collaboration of the Uniate music chapel with other chapels and monastic orders, Jesuits, Dominicans and Conventual Franciscans is explored. In the last part, the author examines the information about the human settlements that are found on the pages of the account books.
