- Summary/Abstract:Under the influence of globalisation and technological innovation, the focus of economic development at a national and regional level is on increasing competitiveness. According to studies by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), global value chains (GVCs) create significant economic opportunities for companies and for the regions in which they operate. The paper presents the results of a Delphi survey on the views of experts on the opportunities, risks, and challenges of enterprise participation in GVCs for regional development. The presented results are based on analyses from Project „Development and implementation of a model for assessing the innovation potential of global value chains as a basis for increasing regional competitiveness” financed by the National Science Fund, contract No КП-06-Н55/8 from 16.11.2021.

- Summary/Abstract:It is the goal of every central bank and government to keep prices stable. To this end, the object of its money supply management policy is to keep inflation—the rate at which the prices of goods and services change over time—always low, sustainable and predictable. The BNB's target is an inflation target of 2% in the medium term as a criterion from Maastricht and the upcoming adoption of the euro as the national currency. Additional limitations are the conditions of the currency board as a system that determines the possibilities of the central bank for interventions. Inflation as a process creates a sense of increased risk of loss of value, which leads citizens and economic agents to seek long-term sustainable investments. As a result, the demand for mortgage loans has increased. The level of inflation today can affect people's expectations of price developments in the future. If consumers and business owners form their policies with very low or very high inflation, they have an expectation that it will stay that way. These expectations are important. Citizens use them when making decisions about spending, borrowing and investing. Firms also take these expectations into account when pricing their goods and services. When these expectations move away from the central bank's inflation target, it becomes very difficult for it to direct real price dynamics in the economy back to this target. The central bank can contribute to avoiding the creation of such expectations by having a clear target and keeping inflation close to it, using, albeit limited, its influence in such conditions. To study the development of these important macroeconomic variables, the methods of econometric analysis based on time series were used for the dynamics of inflation expectations of citizens, inflation, the instruments used by the central bank for influence and the dynamics of mortgage loans granted to citizens.

- Summary/Abstract:Research background: Importance of the energy consumption in the urban structures is getting increasing attention in the context of exhausting of non-renewable sources of energy and the global warming prospective. Therefore, both energy saving and renewable energy options within the built environment are considered to mitigate the looming global negative changes. The concept of Positive Energy Districts (PED) is getting increasing popularity among researchers and urban practitioners. Positive Energy Districts and Neighborhoods are an integral part of comprehensive approaches towards sustainable urbanization including technology, spatial, regulatory, financial, legal, social and economic aspects. Purpose: Worldwide pilot developments are exploring the concept of PED as urban neighborhood with annual net zero energy import and net zero CO₂ emissions by integration between buildings, the residents and the energy, mobility and ICT systems. The purpose of the paper is focused on the investigating the potential of use the concept by integrating of renewable energy sources in apartment housing estates. The phenomenon of prevailing large scale multistory mass housing estates is taking place in almost all Eastern European countries. It leads to threefold problem of low living standard, low energy efficiency and deterioration of housing in such estates. The use of PED concept for such housing estates could have the potential to solve the problem by integrating of RES within the multistory housing. For the purpose it is instrumental to investigate the local specifics, pros and cons for the case of Bulgaria in regard to housing technologies and legislation climate conditions and residents mentality etc. Methods: Analysis of the potential of use of mass large scale condominium housing to be used for integration of RES. Analysis of potential viable options for use of funds from produced energy for refurbishment of multistory apartment buildings and the related institutional and legal provisions that would be necessary. Findings and novelty: The lack of proper maintenance and management of large scale condominium housing is a common problem in post-Soviet Eastern European countries starting from the very beginning of occupation of such apartment buildings. After the political and economic changes in 90-ies of last century the problem worsened in the context of missing legislation and financing that has led to systemic and permanent process of deterioration of such housing. Another weak point of such buildings is the extremely high extent of energy inefficiency leading to increasing issue of energy poverty for the residents of condominium apartments. The paper investigates the potential to convert the problems into opportunities by integration of renewable energy sources into industrially built mass multistory apartment housing using the funds from produced RES energy to fund condominium apartment buildings renovation.

- Summary/Abstract:In modern economic theory, the term development essentially represents economic growth or capital accumulation. The industrial revolution brought rapid and fundamental changes. They are initiated by technical-technological innovations and improvement of models of production and distribution of products and services and lead to significant changes in society and the national economy. The evolution of ICT permeates every aspect of the activities of organizations, allowing them to develop, expand and reach completely new paradigms of existence and provision of products and services. When an organization undertakes changes by implementing new technological solutions, new information technology changes, it also formulates new goals and strategies that affect its processes, models and structures. It is important for companies to be dynamic, flexible and adaptable to multiple changes, as the excessively accelerated pace of change forces organizations and people in them to face indispensable transformations and innovations in all areas of their activity, so they must react in time, to survive and thrive.

- Summary/Abstract:In economic studies, it is accepted as an imperative that achieving growth of the national economy is a prerequisite for a higher standard of living of the population and for development. However, this understanding is the subject of deep debate in scientific circles. One part of the researchers is of the position that growth implies development of the economic system. Other authors share the opinion that economic growth is only one of the components of development, but not sufficient to fully guarantee it. Without claiming a definitive position and comprehensiveness, with the present work we aim to present some of the essential concepts for achieving economic growth, formed in the field of the neoclassical mainstream after the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. More specifically, the task is to identify the prerequisites for achieving economic growth, which create opportunities for development and a higher standard of living of the population. On this basis, the guidelines for developing an effective and successful macroeconomic policy are outlined.

The main goal of the report is to present an analysis of the procedural legitimacy of regulatory laboratories as an innovative legal instrument for policy prototyping. The focus is placed on the specifics of the regime for establishing and operating regulatory laboratories and "testing in real conditions" in accordance with the provisions of the Artificial Intelligence Act (currently under consideration by the European Parliament). In the context of evidence-based policy, the report argues that experimental clauses and regulatory laboratories as opportunities, limitations, and risks for creating a secure and sustainable legal environment for the development of high technologies and artificial intelligence systems cannot be perceived as a standalone procedural meta-instrument in principle but should be integrated into existing traditional regulatory tools.

- Summary/Abstract:The crisis caused by Covid 19 has clearly shown that to survive the company must adapt and introduce new strategies to respond to the imposed negative circumstances. Some of the consequences arising from the crises are the shrinking of company markets, a decrease in customers, and, accordingly, in the volume of sales and income. This negative result, in turn, leads to an overall deterioration of the state of the business and its financial and economic indicators. Therefore, to get out of the crisis, it is necessary to make a deep analysis and to develop and implement appropriate strategic approaches. Covid 19 has shown that one of these approaches is the digitization of company activities, which provides many advantages to companies, including advantages related to their positions in domestic and foreign markets. In connection with this, the development examines the impact of digital transformation on the development of markets. The digitalization of company activity is seen as an approach of strategic importance not only for survival in crisis conditions but also for expanding markets. The level of digital transformation of the Bulgarian business and its role in the development of markets and the increase of customers are analyzed. The company's connection with customers, which is carried out with the help of modern digital devices and electronic media, and its role in improving the market positions of the business, are studied. Consequently, it is concluded that during the crisis as a result of Covid 19 enterprises took a step towards digitalization of business and especially towards the expansion of online sales as a situational anti-crisis measure. Today this approach can and should be aimed at taking into account the overall strategic goals, to the perspective in the development and achievement of sustainability in markets and company results. This means moving from reactive to anticipatory planned crisis management.

- Summary/Abstract:A considerable portion of the agricultural land in the plains of the country is currently used for grain production. This is an industry lying on rich traditions stemming from Bulgaria’s favourable climate coupled with appropriate soil characteristics and valuable features of any such crops for various sorts of fodder fed to farm animals and used in the food industry. The main bulks of cereals open opportunities to guarantee strategic food reserves of Bulgaria. The remaining quantities enjoy good marketability internationally. While cereal crop production enjoys such favourable prerequisites it also faces a number of issues. The list of the latter may start form the lack of labour force in Bulgaria’s rural regions, which would be supposed to apply new technology and make use of today’s modern agricultural equipment or to follow the climatic changes entailing drought, substandard success in fight against natural disasters such as hail or floods, dynamics in the regulatory framework which the competitiveness of the sector would depend on (allowing duty-free imports of grain from other countries), or untimely payment of subsidies. The goal of this article is, bases on the trends in the production of some of the main cereals’ crops, to discuss any opportunities to stimulate the sustainable development of cereal production in Bulgaria and overcoming the consequences of a variety of kinds of crises.

- Keywords:tourism; climate change; adaptation; policy; measures
- Summary/Abstract:One of the greatest challenges facing humanity today is climate change and global warming. Overall, there are two scenarios for global warming: one with less warming and one with more significant warming. For the territory of Bulgaria, there is a strong trend of rising maximum air temperatures in the summer. Average annual rainfall is expected to decrease by about 10% in Western Bulgaria, while the reduction in Eastern Bulgaria is expected to be greater (15-20%). The report examines changes in the two most important climatic parameters for tourism activities – temperature and precipitation. Evidence shows that winter tourism will be much more negatively affected than summer tourism. The seasonality of tourism will also change – the summer season will be extended, while the winter season will shorten drastically. Various adaptation measures and policies for climate change adaptation in the European Union are discussed, and suggestions are made on how they could be applied in Bulgaria. In conclusion, it can be summarized that climate change will have a significant impact on tourism in Bulgaria, particularly on the two most popular types of tourism – seaside summer recreational tourism and winter ski tourism, which have pronounced seasonal characteristics and are highly susceptible to changes in climatic conditions.

- Summary/Abstract:Traditional products are goods and services that are linked to the history and cultural heritage of each country. Their positioning and repositioning in local and international markets contribute to increasing market share, revenues, and the popularity of the country of origin. Careful repositioning is necessary to shift a product or service’s place in customers’ minds, while preserving the connection between traditional products and the country’s economic development. This paper aims to investigate the positioning and repositioning of traditional products using Portuguese company as a case study. The reason for the choice is the dynamic change in the marketing strategies of O Valor do Tempo company and the success achieved in both local and international markets. This good business practice is not yet comprehensively discussed in the marketing publications. The research methods in the paper are a review of published literature on traditional food consumption, the observation method, and a case study. The case study provides an opportunity to explore different dimensions and conditions of the traditional food repositioning process. The main findings are that the repositioning of traditional products, supported by conventional and digital marketing campaigns, increases the revenues of the producing firms and creates conditions for a variety of business internationalization forms.

- Summary/Abstract:On a global scale, emotional intelligence began to be talked about in the 80s of the 20th century. In Bulgaria, in the magazine “Careers”, in 2006, it is mentioned that it is advisable for company managers to hire or develop emotionally intelligent employees. 18 years later, the question of emotionally intelligent employees is still more of an abstract concept for most organizations. Emotional intelligence is defined by Peter Salovey and John Mayer as "the ability to observe one's own and other people's emotions, distinguish between different emotions and label them appropriately, and use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior". The purpose of the report is to explore what people think about emotional intelligence. Also to measure the extent to which different emotions or indicators of emotional intelligence influence people in their work process. Based on the answers to the questions, it will be summarized whether people's demographics influence their emotional intelligence.

- Page Range:333-345
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:higher education; main employment contract; academic autonomy; academic staff
- Summary/Abstract:The development of higher education in Bulgaria in crisis conditions is directly related to the development of the academic staff in higher schools. The academic staff is the highly qualified teaching, scientific-teaching, research, or artistic-creative staff that provides the educational, scientific, artistic-creative, and any other activity corresponding to the specifics of the specific higher school. The status of academic staff is acquired with the conclusion of a basic employment contract according to labor legislation, taking into account the specifics of higher education. The correct understanding of the definition of a basic employment contract and its lawful application in the system of higher education is a prerequisite for creating the necessary conditions for its sustainable development, regardless of whether it is in a crisis or boom. It turns out that with the applied deviations from the legal requirements, conditions are created for influence in the management of the autonomous higher schools, which distorts the implemented state educational policy. This report aims to examine the interrelationship of the concept of "basic employment contract" with the creation of conditions for developing higher education in crisis conditions. The study focuses on public higher education institutions, which does not mean that it is not also applicable to research institutions and private higher education institutions. Based on the analysis, corrective measures are also proposed for the unambiguous application of the concept of "main employment contract" in the higher education system.

- Summary/Abstract:Perception and sensation represent together the sensory degree of cognition, or all that we feel, see, recall, think about, and do, where the perception is essential for our subsequent behaviors, reactions and actions, and includes a wide range of psychological occurrences. The study examines how visual perception is influenced by images. Humans have been surrounded by images throughout their evolutionary history, dating back to the first cave wall paintings. As an individual develops, perception alters their beliefs, predispositions and attitudes. Through examining visual perceptions as a subjective phenomenon, we come to differentiate a number of efficient methods based on the various phases of image generation and development: the immediate confidence in the legitimacy of each image following the invention of photography, undermined by its primary features; the subsequent image manipulation techniques on analogue or digital media through further processing and the advent of computer-generated images through Artificial Intelligence (AI) software, with the potential to be quickly and easily distributed. Can we assert that, upon the rise of AI, we will lose all accumulated methods and strategies in order to revolutionize the ways in which we control visual perception? To what extent can we rely on them for perceiving visual information? Could we manage perception with its help in a dynamically- shifting reality? Two case studies written by authors working in the realm of AI-based art are examined in an attempt to provide an answer. Modern artificial intelligence technologies for image generation have largely replaced the traditional techniques which have been studied, documented, and shown to be successful in managing audience perceptions in the past. That being said, these new technologies allow for the conception of a new reality, which raises a continuous stream of new questions with ambiguous answers, and will continue to do so.

- Summary/Abstract:The article reviews the psychological mechanisms of narrative persuasion which contribute to narrative’s impact on people’s attitudes, beliefs and behaviours. We explore some of the cognitive processes with potential to amplify the efficacy of the narrative persuasion in overcoming resistance: narrative transportation (narrative engagement, absorption), when people are getting deeply cognitively and emotionally involved in a story, identification, when the story is experienced from a character’s perspective and self-referencing, a process of connecting the narrative information with personal memories. Narrative persuasion and applying stories as tools for communication, education and leading change is explored in organisational context – the organisational storytelling.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the results of a study of the relations "coping strategies - handedness" among managers. In order to verify the hypothesis that handedness is a factor initiating individual differences in preferred coping strategies among people working at managerial positions, The Edinburgh inventory for handedness assessment (Oldfield, 1971) and the preferred Stress Coping Strategies Questionnaire (adapted for Bulgarian population by Rusinova-Hristova and Karastoyanov (Rusinova-Hristova, Karastoyanov, 2000) 56 participants aged 32-59 years (25 men and 31 women), were studied. The results found significant handedness-related differences: left-handers tend to use significantly less often the problem-focused strategies “active coping” and “suppression of competing activities”, and more often the emotion-focused strategies “behavioral disengagement” and “mental disengagement”, compared to both right-handers and mixed handers; at the group level, mixed-handers more often used the emotion-focused strategy “denial”, with a statistically significant between-group difference with right-handers and a close to statistically significant difference with left-handers.

- Keywords:social networks; liking, feedback; virtual space; emoticons
- Summary/Abstract:In the era of globalization, it is almost impossible to imagine an Internet business or promotion without a presence on social networks. The idea of effective exchange of ideas has essentially remained the same since the creation of the first modern social networks, and its advancement has been aided by the development of numerous opportunities that digital platforms can provide today. Presence on most social networks is free. The potential of digital platforms is expressed in the fact that they have a large number of users to whom we can address our messages. The biggest advantage is space for two-way communication, especially since in 2009 Liking was introduced as feedback – a response to certain events and actions. However, feedback reveals the liker's intentions. Just like the perfume you smell is meant for those closest to you, not far away, likes are meant for the owner of the respective page. Likes reveal the intentions of the liker, which is why it is necessary to adapt the like itself, especially considering the characteristics of the product, the goals, the competition, and even the marital status of the individual who uploaded the content. It is important to remember that just as it is advisable not to use perfumes that contain vanilla, lavender or gardenia, so do likes expressed with a heart emoticon, unless the liker and the owner of the post are in an emotional relationship.

- Summary/Abstract:The problem of cognitive biases and their detrimental effects in the organisational context has become increasingly popular today, given the prevalent external factors such as aggressive competition, limited resources, and "information pollution." These factors, in combination with personal cognitive "distortions ", are significant predictors of entrepreneurial burnout. This article provides an overview of the leading theoretical perspectives that clarify the nature and significance of the concept of "cognitive biases" or "cognitive tendencies". The evolution of the term and the various types of "cognitive biases" presented in Buster Benson's categorical model are discussed. The role and practical implications of "cognitive biases" in management and entrepreneurship are analysed. The relationship between "cognitive biases," as a systematic model of deviation from norms or rationality in assessments, and the various tasks and functions of management and leadership, including decision-making, risk perception, opportunity evaluation, and more, is explored. Possible solutions, strategies and techniques for managing and reducing the impact of cognitive biases in the business environment are discussed.

She is a personal quality (cognitive) or acquired, after learning to manage emotions (emotional intelligence). Business communications are carried out through certain channels through various techniques and ways of conducting. The parties in this process strive to achieve efficiency, to solve a pre-planned goal, to build trust and alliances. Intelligent technologies come to the rescue, replacing humans and bringing change to their work. For smooth communication, artificial intelligence must have access to reliable information to avoid distortions and inaccuracies. Our thesis is that the role of smart technologies is to automate the communication process and improve its qualities.

- Summary/Abstract:Scientists, politicians and media call the demographic situation in our country a problem, a crisis and even a catastrophe. The statistics paint a bleak picture and an even worse outlook. But despite this, demographic problems have not been brought up as a priority of the responsible national institutions, as it was done with the full entry of our country into the Schengen area or the Eurozone. There are no noticeable results from the piecemeal measures to improve the demographic picture, and the reason for this is that the mutual dependence between demography and other social systems, the most important of which is educational, is not understood. The report argues that one must look beyond statistics to uncover the real causes of the demographic collapse and highlights the interdependence between education and demographics. The results of an empirical study conducted among students from different schools and cities are presented, including in a secondary general education school, a profiled mathematical high school, a profiled language high school and a vocational school, with the aim of studying the subjective attitudes of young people about their own development, their opinions about the existing demographic situation and their tendency to seek realization abroad.

- Summary/Abstract:In the recent years, the many economic shocks and shutdowns of major production facilities caused by events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, military conflicts, acts of terrorism, natural disasters and other unforeseen events, have led to increased interest in supply chain resilience among both the scientific and business communities. The classic risk management methods applied so far are insufficient to prepare organizations for the rapidly changing and hard to predict environment in modern business, due to their inability to adequately characterize events with low probability and high consequences. Resilience aims to overcome this shortcoming and appears to be a new approach to ensure the continuity of supply chain operations. There is no generally accepted definition of resilience in scientific and business circles. The main purpose of this report is to present the essence and characteristics of resilient supply chains as they are considered in the scientific literature and to derive a definition of the concept of resilience that covers the main characteristics of and expectations towards resilient supply chains.

- Keywords:standardization; tourism; hospitality; audit; service
- Summary/Abstract:Standardization in the field of tourism services primarily serves as a guarantee for the declared level of quality and safety during the consumption process. The introduction of standards in a tourism enterprise sets the principles of work for employees and simultaneously ensures that the interests of tourism service consumers are protected from unfair competition in the market. In this sense, the standard is viewed as an effective tool for regulating market relationships between producers, representatives of tourism services, and consumers. This study adopts this assertion as a starting premise and develops it in the context of corporate strategies. Its aim is to demonstrate the effects of using standards in hospitality through the example of leading global companies and to define areas for improvement tailored to Bulgarian conditions. Methodologically, the study analyzes specific cases, applies critical analysis to secondary sources, and incorporates interviews with hotel managers in Bulgaria to identify their attitudes toward service standards. The findings indicate that service standards have established themselves as a significant management tool. The evolution of corporate strategies in Bulgarian hospitality is characterized by a gradual increase in trust in standards and the search for opportunities to integrate them into the process assurance of provided tourism services.

- Summary/Abstract:The tourism development of the municipality of Samokov is determined by the availability of favorable tourist resources for various types of tourism, a functioning tourist material and technical base and a larger or smaller constant flow of tourists. The municipality is characterized by a pronounced two-season tourism - high winter ski tourism and twice as low summer mountain tourism. There are, however, a number of changes and challenges that necessitate the timely adaptation of tourism in the municipality and the development of alternative types of tourism. A prerequisite for such adaptation is the wealth of cultural and historical resources in the Samokov municipality. The report examines the most important of them, indicating the individual types of tourism that can be developed on their basis. The problems in the management of tourism in the municipality are also examined, the main challenge being climate changes, the post-Covid-19 adaptation of the tourist offer, the management at the municipal and company level, the lack of initiative among the local population and the proximity of Sofia to the municipality, which does not imply a large increase in the overnight stays of Bulgarian citizens. Alternative solutions are proposed to overcome the changes and difficulties facing the organization of tourism in Samokov municipality.

- Summary/Abstract:Building a sustainable society is a serious challenge for governments, who play a major role in promoting it, setting policies that change the view that one must pursue economic growth at all costs. Tourism is a complex phenomenon that involves a variety of variables and relationships. It is understood as an activity of fundamental importance to society and one of the main factors of human interaction and integration, (political, cultural and economic), in a world increasingly globalized in all its aspects. Sustainable tourism development considers cultural authenticity, economic impact, social inclusion, environmental protection, service quality and local government capacity as conditions essential to the long-term viability of tourism. Tourism sustainability depends on the planning and implementation of key aspects that support it. The aspects to be taken into account are: economic, socio-cultural and political-institutional simultaneously. Sustainable development is progress in the political, social, economic, environmental, health, technological, cultural and recreational aspects of community life. It is related to improving the quality of life. It contains not only the material but also the immaterial aspects of life – all aspects of well-being from health status to economic well-being and political freedom. Assessments of the sustainability of tourism must be expanded and deepened in all its aspects, in parallel with the development of the tourism industry and the increase in variability and complexity of its influences. The study presented analyses the theoretical content of the concept for sustainable tourism development and its basic aspects.

- Summary/Abstract:Economic sustainability, civic education, and circular tourism can be seen as factors in developing apitourism (bee tourism) and innovative business practices. The research includes the topic in two directions. From an economic perspective, it will look at how the principles of circularity in tourism support apitourism initiatives, indicating the contribution of such practices to local economies’ sustainability (i.e., bee hives that launch apitourism programs). The second objective focuses on the sociological perspective, revealing how apitourism fosters students' civic engagement. Good practices of developing environmental responsibility, sustainable practices and student involvement in local communities through apitourism will be presented. The study's main contribution is the inferred interrelationship of economic, environmental and civic practices in the provision of bee tourism, aiming to highlight the transformative effects on students. It can be assumed that beehive adoption and beekeeping initiatives will be some of the successful opportunities to integrate apitourism as a civic education method. With this in mind, the research aims to inspire educators, policymakers and practitioners to consider such practices.
